DH and I have always talked about baby names since early on in our relationship mostly because we don't want to name our kids after ourselves (like his dad did with him and my dad did with my brother) and because our names can be so common in our community. But, now that the baby's on the way, we are out of ideas with baby name. We have one girl name we like, but that's about it. So, we decided to just wait until we find out the sex to choose a name.
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg?
How did you decide on a name?
When did it become the final choice for the baby?
Re: s/o baby names (poll)
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg? Nope.
How did you decide on a name? Once we found out it was a boy, we started looking at baby names (in books) and wrote the ones we liked
When did it become the final choice for the baby? On our way to the hospital when I was in labor. I actually wanted to wait until he was born, but dh decided that we had to know before we got there.
We looked at the top 1,000 boys baby name list from the census and each wrote down the names we liked and them compared our lists
My blog
- We had our boy name picked out before we got engaged b/c my husband wants to name our first son after his grandfather. So, we have always had a boy name.
- Once we found out we were pregnant with a girl...we were at a loss. We totally expected a boy. We went through a dozen names...one of which was Sophie but DH nixed it. Did not like it.
- One night after a shower he came out and said that he had thought about it and really did like the name Sophia. And so, Sophie it was. Victoria, her middle name, is after my paternal grandmother who died when I was 19.
...as for this pregnancy. We are waiting until we know the sex to think of possible girl names. We have a middle name picked out already, his maternal grandmother, but have not been able to agree on a first name we both like for another girl.
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg? No. I had names that I liked, but we never picked anything out.
How did you decide on a name? After we found out that we were having a boy, we went through the baby book and each picked out names that we liked.
When did it become the final choice for the baby? Quinn was the ONLY name we agreed on and when we saw it, we knew that it was perfect. His middle name, Joseph, is a family name on both sides - my DH's middle name, his dad's middle name, my father and brother's middle name, and my grandfather's first name.
This time around, we decided to keep with our "tradition" that middle names would be after someone in our family so, if it is a girl, her middle name will be my great grandmother's first name, and if it is a boy, his middle name will be DH's grandfather's name who passed a year ago. First names were decided the same way as Quinn's, they were the only names we both agreed on :-)
We had Nicky's name , Nicholas James, picked out since early in our relaptionship, which was 8 years before he was born. We didn't have a girl name at all until we were pg the first time.
We both just liked the name Nicholas and James is my DH's name so deciding on a boy name was easy for us. With the girl name, we were originally going to use the name Daniela Anne for a girl, but as I've posted quite a few times, my MIL was so vocal about her dislike of the name Daniela, it ruined it for us, so we decided to start over from scratch.
My second choice for a girl name was Vanessa, but DH didn't like it. His choices for girls names were Stephanie (which I didn't want because its my sister's name), Janine (too 70's) and Jordana (which is just NMS at all). Adrianna came up during a discussion and it we agreed on it immediately. So this baby will be Adrianna Anne. Anne was my grandmother's name. She passed away last summer at 91 years old. She was my most special person in the world, so the middle name was never negotiable.
We decided on names before we got engaged...I have had a girl name picked out since I was 14 and DH liked it so we kept it. As for the boy name, I can't remember exactly how we picked it, but we definitely wanted the first names to be more American and we didn't want names that anyone else in our families have. We did pick DH's grandfather's name for DS' middle name though...
Allison...I cannot remember if you found out the sex with Quinn! Was the sex a surprise? Are you keeping it a surprise this time?
We have had a long time to think about names and narrowed it down to 2 boy and 2 girl names we love. You never know if we need double options soon again.
We found out at 18 weeks with Quinn that we were having a boy, and we'll find out next Wednesday, March 24 at 20 weeks what the sex of this baby is. I can't wait! It won't be a secret, but we keep the name quiet until the baby is born (we have very opinionated friends and family ;-).
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg? We had a girl name picked out since when we were dating. But never a boy name.
How did you decide on a name? The same way we've decided on how to name our last dog. Sad but true. We both made lists of names we liked. Then we'd start hacking away at the list until it got down to a few names. Luckily when it got down to a few names we both LOVED Michael.
When did it become the final choice for the baby? After we went through the list it was final.
LOL! We named our dogs after movie characters and now that I think about it, most baby names I like are movie/literary characters.
I have my favorite names already, even w/ middle names (actually the middles names are a must), but Dh isn't convinced w/ them and won't talk baby names until it is time!
When I was pg last yr for a split second, we did talk a lo about baby names, and everytime we liked a name, we just wrote it down. We never made it to buying a baby name book or searching online at a long list, but I'm sure that would be included in the next resarch. LOL

We casually talked about baby names before we started TTC, but all that amounted to was one girl's name using my great-grandmother's middle name. SIL has since had a daughter and named her what we would have used for a first name. I still want to use the middle name if we have a girl at some point, but I have a feeling this baby is a boy.
We do have a boy's name tentatively picked out, but we just came up with it during this pregnancy. We haven't talked much about names. It's overwhelming and we decided it's not worth worrying about until we know the gender.
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg? Yes...we started talking about baby names when we started dating LOL. We "settled" on various girl names throughout the course of the relationship...I put "settled" in quotes because we changed our mind a few times. Our boy name has been our top choice from the beginning - Nicolas. Don't think that will change.
How did you decide on a name? Almost exactly one year before I got pregnant, I had a really vivid dream that I had a daughter named Emma. I thought it was really random because it's not a name I had ever considered or talked about with DH. I told him the name and he loved it, so it became one of our top contenders for a girl. Right when we found out I was pregnant, DH said that if it was a girl, her name would be Emma. The middle name took us a while longer. We waited till we found out it was a girl to fully decide. I wanted something with family significance. I pushed for Gabrielle, after DH (Gabriel), but then her initials would have been "EGG" so DH nixed it. We finally settled on Alexis (my dad and brother are both Alex) at around 20-something weeks.
When did it become the final choice for the baby? See above.
Did you already have names picked out before TTC or pg? DH and I had talked about it and discussed names we liked, but we never had that moment where we said "this is the one when the time comes"
How did you decide on a name? Honestly, I know it sounds super cliche, but it just came to me. I had never, ever considered Carley before. We knew we wanted to keep it simple, but not one of those names you hear every day.
When did it become the final choice for the baby? We actually only had a girl name picked out at the time of our ultrasound. So when we found out it was a girl, we knew Carley Elizabeth was her name. Had she been a boy, I still have no idea what we would have chosen. We had some names on our list, but since we found out the gender at 20 weeks, we never had to narrow it down and pick one.
