Quick: Single and Manual Breast Pump Help!

We're visiting my folks in upstate NY and I forgot my breast pump Sad  I'm pretty sure it's on the table at home all packed with other carry on stuff... Embarrassed

So... we're here for a week and I'd like to go this morning and pick up a pump.  How long will it take to get milk with a manual pump?  Or should I just get a single electric?  We're traveling up here 2 more times so I'd get more use out of it, plus my sister is expecting #2 in August and doesn't have a pump... so I'd give this one to her so I could justify the purchase a little more... thoughts???

Re: Quick: Single and Manual Breast Pump Help!

  • If your sister doesn't mind using a used pump, I would try and see if she might split the cost of a double electric with you.

I've never used a single or manual pump, so I don't know how much of a hassle it would be to use one.

I should have mentioned that unfortunately helping out in any way isn't really an option for her...  but thanks for the suggestion!

  • The manual pumps never seem to get all of the milk out for me.  I've tried both the Ameda Isis one and the Medela one (IMO, the Ameda one works a little better).  I'd be more inclined to just get the single electric one.  It depends on how much you are going to be pumping though. If it's just 1-2x/day than maybe it would be ok.

I found that I would have to pump with the manual pump and then hand express to get the rest of the milk out.

    HTH!

****I forgot to answer the question regarding time - it used to take me about 10-15 min per side to get out about 3-4 oz.  So about 30 or so min.   I used a manual pump on one of our trips and vowed to never do it again - IMO it would have been worth the extra baggage for me to have brought my electric.

  • I have the Medela Swing, and I like it. I've never tried a manual pump because it seemed like too much of a hassle. With the single, you obviously have to spend twice as long pumping as a double, but it is just as efficient, IMO. I would imagine a manual pump would take more time than it's worth.

I ONLY use a manual! Weird, right? I got it at first before I did research on an electric and I ended up really liking it. I get 5 oz in 20 minutes (10 each side)... sometimes faster.

I think it might work out well for just a trip.

  • I had the swing and used it to pump enough when I went back to work. It has the same mechanics of the Pisa, just in a single.
  • Ugh.  I had to use a manual at the milk study and I could barely get 1/2 an ounce each time I pumped.  I would get an electric.

  • I believe most hospitals/ birthing centers rent out the top-notch industrail power pumps for around $50 per month.  This would get you a good quality pump, plus you wouldn't have to worry about travelling with it.  i wonder if any hospitals rent on a weekly basis?   just an option.
