What can I take?

I have a call into my PA, but I'm pretty sure I am coming down w/ a sinus infection or have a head cold.  Both DH and I have it.  My face hurts so bad.  I cant lay down and sleep.  I've tried looking online but nothing seems to say what I can definitely have and what I can't have so do you ladies know?  I've been taking the tylenol sinus congestion but I've seen articles online saying I shouldn't take a decongestant.  I'm so tired, I'd prob do anything to breath and sleep at the moment.

Re: What can I take?

  • Claritin, claritin, claritin. I was congested my entire pregnancy and this tiny little wonder drug was a godsend. I didn't have any problems sleeping when I took it.

  • I am so sorry!  I had a horrible cold a few weeks ago.  My doc suggested Benedryl and saline spray.  They didn't work as well as my usual remedies, but I was able to get some relief.

    Feel better soon!

was it the clairitin D or just regular claritin?  I have benadryl and regular clairitin on hand and I've been doing the saline nose rinse.

  • careful with the tylenol decongestant. i was under the silly impression that any tylenol product was ok, but my pharmacist told me that only regular old tylenol is the ok product. the others, particularly the decongestants (b/c they have additional active ingrediants) are not necessarily ok. the one i wanted to take was a class C drug, meaning there are no conclusive studies to indicate whether it's ok or not. it's the same ingredients as Sudafed PE.

i suggest doing daily saline rinses, eating raw garlic (will help if you have an infection, either swallow the cloves whole, or chew them up if you can stand it), and taking tylenol for the pain. also, a humidifier will help, along with hot steam...try a hot shower.

sorry you are going through this!

  • Regular. I should have mentioned - I think it's a category b drug, though, so you might want to double check with your doc (mine were all okay with it).

  • we must have the same thing, when I called the OB's office they said Tylenol is OK but I don't normally take meds anyway so I'm just kinda suffering thru it. Feel better soon!!
  • Being sick and pregnant is the worse.  I was in your shoes around 30 weeks.  IT SUCKED.  My OB office gave me a list of "safe drugs".  So I took my list to the pharmacy.  I ended up chatting with the pharmacist who didn't think any of the drugs on the list were safe enough.  So being sick, indecisive, and not able to process a thought - I ended up taking tylenol and praying for the whole thing to be over.

Good luck!  I feel your pain!
