Austin Babies

am i being paranoid?

so i think i am but not sure. i work in the music biz and obviously will be at some shows this week for sxsw. (not too many, this year i am taking it light since i am 36 weeks pg!)

anyway, do you think the baby's ears are ok? i mean i wear earplugs at shows for my personal hearing - but is she in there packed up enough for her hearing to be ok?

i have been debating whether or not to call the nurse at the OB and ask this question - mainly because part of me thinks i am crazy for even wondering. what do you think?

Re: am i being paranoid?

  • :::not an expert... Not even a mom:::but isn't the baby packed in there with lots of fluid that distorts sound? I would have never even considered this issue... Interested to see what others say.

  • Despite my better judgment, I went to a very loud show at Austin Music Hall on Friday night. Baby seems to do well with loud noises - we've been to the IMAX and some Jazz shows a few times and she danced along to the noise. On Friday she slept through the entire show and then as soon as we left the music hall started kicking up a storm - I think the quiet threw her off... Obviously not medical advise, but I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary since then. The worst part of the show was the back and foot pain from overexerting myself as well as the WTF looks from other people around me not expecting to see a 9 month preggo at a rock concert... I say have fun, but don't overdo it as you'll most definitely pay for it later - I could barely walk on Saturday...

Ha! I am sooooo knowing I am already going to get some of those too!!! Can't wait!

  • Go for it.  Your baby is well protected.  We used to go to church at Austin Music Hall and it was like a rock concert when Anderson was tiny - I'd wear him (the clothe blocked some of the sound, I figured) and he was totally unaffected by the loud noise.  Have fun!

  • You are not crazy. When I was 37 weeks I went to a work party at a ranch where there was skeet shooting (only in Texas do work parties involve guns...). I was not at the range, but close enough, apparently. I wasn't really thinking about loud noise until the first shots went off. And holy cow, the baby jumped about a mile and would kick/jump at each shot until I could waddle far enough away and get inside. So, yes, they can hear loud noises in there(!), but loud music is probably different than bursts of super-loud gunfire. Maybe just don't stand right next to the speaker.
