I'M GRAPE JELLY- ALWAYS AROUND & ALWAYS THE SAME
If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me. For I must be traveling on now. Because there are too many places I've got to see. -Allen Collins & Ronnie VanZant

I don't really consider much out of a can "healthy." You can easily make sloppy joes with just a little ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and salt and pepper. Still not the healthiest meal, but probably better.
okay.. I'm reading a local news blog (not the local news... but someone who puts news together from real news sources). and post is about people in one area of the city being fatter, yet hungrier and the steps the city is implementing to provide or encourage healthier eating... someone said it's an option and that they could buy a meal (of buns, manwich, ground beef, and veggies) that feeds his/her family for 2 meals for under $20. And all I can think is manwich and canned veggies (while better than mcd's) is not a healthy meal. I mean, if this is what you're serving 7 days a week???? ick. and I like to have a sloppy joe night here and there. but man, those manwich equals a serving of veggies commercials make me want to hurl.
I don't think it's horrible for you if you make it with lean ground turkey and serve it on whole wheat buns with a veggie side. I wouldn't say it's an ideal meal, but I wouldn't feel guilty serving it to my family.
This can absolutely be a healthy meal when prepared and served with lean meats and whole grain bread. Canned veggies beats the hell out of chips any day (though honestly, frozen is more nutrious). The sauce is not all that different from ketchup and it doesn't have to be dripping with sauce.
I add onions and celery and we eat them with cheese (helps it from soaking through the bottom bun, too), lettuce, and tomatoes, so for us, it's pretty healthy I think, other than the salt content. All four basic food groups.

I make mine home made too, I can't stand the taste of that manwich stuff. Also- I'll serve it over wheat noodles with a veg on the side for dinner. So while its not 100% healthy- I don't consider it bad this way.
No, but I do make homemade sloppy joes and they are super yummy and much more healthy!

Re: do you consider Manwich Sloppy Joe's to be a healthy meal?
I vote No because when I make it, I use full fat beef and eat potato chips with it.
I still make it and love it!
