Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My canker sore cure.....

I posted a month or so ago about remedies for canker sores. I get terrible ones that last 14 days and then 2 weeks later I get another one. I got a perscription from the dr and it did little to help.

Then I started to think about the fact that the entire time I was TTC and pregnant I never got 1 canker sore....??? So I did further research online and discovered there is a link b/w a folic acid difficiency and B12 and canker sores! Prenatals obviously have folic acid in them!!

So I started taking a folic acid and B12 supplement in addition to my 1 a day vitamin and I have not had a canker sore in 6 weeks!!!!!!!! AMEN.

Just thought I would share in case anyone else suffers from these nasty and painful sores.

Re: My canker sore cure.....

  • I get them all the time and you just totally shed light on the fact that I went 9 months without a single one!

I have been so bad at taking care of myself lately. I'm ordering vitamins TODAY.

  • wow...you could have really saved my life a while back.  I was the same way-I never had a canker sore while pregnant and can't remember having a horrible one (without biting) since I have been on prenatal!

I love this discovery..canker sores ruin my life for a good two weeks at a time.  grrrr.

  • Something else to try is switching toothpaste ... I did some online reading and switched to Sensodyne (from Crest/Colgate), which is for sensitive teeth, based on recommendations that "regular" toothpaste can often irritate gums. I'm on my third or fourth tube now and haven't had one since switching.

I will continue to take my prenatal even after baby #2 to ward off any other canker sores ... thanks for the news!

  • Wow, thank you!!  I had also read about the ingredient in toothpaste that could cause them, so I switched from Crest to Tom's of Maine toothpaste.  I did this right as we started TTC (in other words, I had also just started taking prenatal vitamins).  They went away, and I completely attributed it to the toothpaste.  Now I see there was a different reason.  I still get them occasionally, but it's only due to mouth trauma (biting my cheek on accident).  I think the new toothpaste really helps to not aggravate it though.  They go away much much faster!
