going back to work - bf adjusting ?

I go back to work in 2 weeks.  I am planning on bfing LO in the mornings and at night and supplementing with formula during the day at the sitters.  Currently I EBF.  I am thinking that next Monday I will switch to this supplementing scheduke to give LO one week to get used to it and also give my boobs and supply one week to adjust.  Is that enough time do you think?

Re: going back to work - bf adjusting ?

  • Has she had a bottle before or formula?  it might take longer than you think to switch.  Have you considered pumping at work?

  • My LO has been on the bottle and breast since birth and still hates the bottle.  I would start now!  Good luck!  BTW, she is drinking breast milk only and hates when the milk runs out and she has to eat formula.  This has only happened a few times but she flat out refuses to eat it.  I hope yours does better.

yes, she takes botlles of BF really well, but hasnt had formula yet..maybe we will start this week.  I have long and hard about trying to pump at work, but for me this is the route we have decided to go in for lots of reasons

  • I'm probably going to do the same thing because of work (pumping just doesn't work with some jobs, period). I go back April 6. My son has had four bottles of formula so far- one bottle per day for three days, then two bottles yesterday. So far, so good. I'm going to continue to step up the formula bottles every couple of days.

    I'd start the transition now.

  • I will suggest Similac Organic then.  It is sweeter like BM.  It is the only formula my DD1 would take.  Even if I mixed it with BM she wouldn't drink it.  I couldn't blame her.  Most formula is horrible tasting.

I also suggest starting this week.

  • This is exactly what I'm doing right now. I also go back in 2 weeks and am hoping to bf in the morning/at night. I seriously considered pumping at work but I knew if I spent all of my free time pumping (I teach) than I would have to stay later working and would have to bring more work home. I would then be more overwhelmed and would have less time to spend with dd. I would rather give her bm sometimes/formula sometimes and be able to give her more quality time with mom. I'm already so sad about having to leave her, I don't want to come home to her at the end of the day and not be able to give her my full attention! I was planning to start the transition today, but we had company very late and I didn't get the routine going that I wanted. So tonight we are starting a more strict bedtime schedule and tomorrow I am planning to start my schoolday feeding schedule. DD had formula for the first time a few weeks ago and took it with no problem. She has had it several times a week since. Hopefully your DD will be the same way!
  • Thanks for asking this question! I was wondering the same thing- and got some great advice on the answers.
