Re: introducing solids ?

  • Unfortunately there aren't any set rules for solids, which made me anxious, but we started with once a day at first. It worked best for us to feed her solids before a bottle because she wouldn't even try them if she was full already. Also, Caroline never liked the rice cereal so we switched to oatmeal and she loved it. GL!

  • As steph said, there are no set rules.  But, we did the same thing--tried the cereal before bottle.  L liked the rice cereal and we did fine.  He really liked the oatmeal when we switched to that.

I kept at once a day until told otherwise by the pedi.  We started around 5 months and then started to add other purees after pedi gave okay.

Good luck and welcome to the world of solids!Smile

  • We started out once a day, after a week or so of doing really well, we up'd it to 2x a day and she's still at that pace. She's not acting like she needs more at this point, so we aren't in any hurry to go to 3 meals a day.

We were told to offer solids 30mins-1hr after a regular feeding because the breastmilk/formula needs to be the primary source of nutrition. Right now, solids just compliment bm/formula and should not be replacing the calories she gets from that. KWIM?

We started with rice cereal but it constipated her reeeeeally bad, so we switched to oatmeal.

This. In the beginning, G would not eat solids if she was super hungry. About an hour after a feeding was a good time to try b/c she was not too full but not too hungry. We did about 1 tsp of rice cereal about 2x per day. We quickly moved to oatmeal and banana flavored oatmeal. We only did cereal for about 2 weeks before we started with mashed bananas and avocados. Good luck!

  • We were also told to offer after normal feeding, more as like a "dessert," so that the solids don't interfere with the baby's primary source of nutrition (BF or formula). We do about an hour after nursing. We started with bananas and avocado once a day (dinner), and have since added sweet potatoes, apples, and mangos. Just this weekend we added in oatmeal for breakfast, so now she's getting 2 solids a day--breakfast and dinner. We never did cereal.

("They" say to introduce new foods in the morning or early afternoon so that if there is an allergic reaction, you have the day to discover and deal with it. However, given the nature of our work schedules, it works better for us to introduce new foods at dinner because that is the meal we have together. There is no history of food allergies in either side of our family, so pedi said this was fine.)

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Our pedi said to give the solids first (totally opposite of what I thought), but I bf first in the morning and then he gets solids about 30min-1hr later.  Then in the evening we give solids first and then a bottle before bed.  We tried the rice cereal but he didn't like it, but loves the oatmeal.  We started at 5 months so just did cereal in the evening for about 3-4 weeks, then went to 2 purees in the evening and cereal and one puree in the morning around 6 months.  We are going to 3 meals a day in the next few weeks.
