Postpartum Depression

PPD/PPA and BF

I am having a lot of anxiety and feeling very depressed.  I finally broke down and called the dr again and I have an appt on Monday.  However I am scared to take any meds while breastfeeding.  I know most of the medicine will only pass a minimal amount through to my milk but it scares me.  If you BF and have PPD/A what all are you on?  I have heard that Zoloft is ok when you BF but does that help with the anxiety?  That is my main problem and I am really worried that I won't be able to take anything to ease the anxiety.  I don't want to quit BF either because it is one thing that makes me feel close to DS but I need something...

Re: PPD/PPA and BF

  • I take a generic version called sertraline and haven't had any issues with bf'ing. My main issue was anxiety as well and it has helped TREMENDOUSLY with that!!

  • I was on Lexapro which my midwife said yes and the pediatric nurse said no because there haven't been enough studies. I looked it up myself, found the warning signs to look for in DD and decided to try. I was an exclusive pumper so we started just with a little bit of my milk with the meds mixed with the frozen milk we had. Eventually she was on just my medicated milk (that sounds weird) and she had no issues what so ever. She's still a happy and healthy child.
