High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone have a 32 week planned induction?

On the Dr's rounds tonight at the hospital she mentioned testing the fluid (if I have enought left to test by then) and if her lungs were developed enough going on and inducing labor at 32 weeks instead of 34.

Granted I will have had the steroid shots for 6 weeks by then, but does that seem odd to anyone?  I know they know what they are doing, but just curious?

  • This seems a little early to me but I guess they have a reason for not waiting...what is their reason? low fluid level?

  • I'm being induced in a little over a week from now. I'll be just a few days over 36 weeks. My dr. wouldn't do it before then. I even had to reschedule the amnio a week later since he thought an induction any sooner than 35 wks was risky. I had the steroid shots over a month ago.

You mention if you had enough fluid left to test? maybe that's why they want to do your induction ASAP. If you are leaking fluid then it's prob necessary. Did they do a biophysical profile? I would ask a alot of questions- for me I know it's because I had a late term loss. But even so I am worried about interupting a natural process- although, I feel I have no choice than to go along with an early induction.

  • My water started leaking a month ago, so I've been in the hospital since then and it's basically gone down to nothing.  She keeps making more and I keep leaking it out.

I do have biophysicals twice a week and they have me hooked to the heart rate/contraction monitor twice a day for an hour and everything looks great on those, with the exception of having no fluid, but all her stuff is great with the exception of one decell episode, but they aren't concerned yet.

Thankfully everything has been going well, but since there is no fluid she has a better chance of laying or playing with her embilical cord and that can cause issues.

So, I think that's why they would do it at 32 weeks if her lungs were ready just because she has no fluid, but it just seems a little early to me as well, but I'm in the best neonatal hospital in KY and they've been great so far, but it just struck me as odd today.

  • Seems early, but I am sure they have their reasons.  Sometimes its a matter of if the baby will be better off outside than in.  Thats what I am going through right now.  As long as they are healthy and happy they stay in, but at the first sign of trouble they are taking them. If it makes you feel better we had a consult with a neonatologist the other night and he was very encouraging and says 32 weekers tend to do great, need minimal breathing assistance, especially if they have had the steriod shots and usually just need feeding and temp regulating assistance and go home several weeks before their due date.

  • My friend had her twins at 32 weeks because of TTTS and it was deemed the babies are safer outside then they are inside. She was given two sets of steroids, one at 26 weeks and then again 30 weeks, this was two weeks ago and they are doing well. I have had my goal to get to 32 weeks for some time and they are going to take out my stitch at 34 weeks where there is a high probability that I would go into labor. My Dr. says she doesn't stop labor once her patients hit 34 weeks if they have steroids.

    Good luck to you!

  • That sounds fine. 32 weekers do well and you are right about the umbilical cord issues.  They are probably ecstatic that you have done so well with so little fluid.  They always have to weigh the risks of inside vs outside.  With the steroid shots and your close monitoring I am sure you are as safe as they can make you and LO.  They probably initially wanted to wait til 34 weeks hoping that you would reseal the leak and reaccumumlate fluid and when you haven't they are thinking better out than in.  The infection risks for the baby and you are still there as long as you haven't resealed so that is another consideration.  Good luck. It sounds like you are in good hands
  • Thanks everyone for the comments....you think I will learn how to spell umbilical cord by the end of all this...good grief.

I'm estatic that I'm 30 weeks today (my ticker is 1 day off) and I feel a whole lot better about everything now than the previous 4 weeks.  Hopefully I will get to 32 weeks and we can all decide what's best then.

I've just got to keep her off her umbilical cord and wish I would refill will fluid.  I did once early on but started leaking it all out again at around 2 1/2-3 weeks.  It still amazes me that they can be in there with little to no amnionic fluid.  Her swimming pool has been downgraded to a puddle!
