I'm asking, because I feel like I hear all the time that people get pregnant "without trying". Sometimes they are using a form of BC, sometimes not. What do you think?

I voted all of the above. I think if you're not preventing, you are trying! I don't get the surprise factor when there is no BC plan.
This.
My friend's girlfriend just announced that she is pregnant. He thought she was on BCP. It turns out she stopped taking them and didn't tell him (she says, "I assumed he knew because he always see me take them". Idiot.)
She claims she wasn't trying to get pregnant even though they weren't using any birth control and that she 'just wasn't preventing'. First of all, BS, and once again, idiot.

I think it is totally possible to be TTA and not using any form of birth control.
Yes, but when you are specifically TTA, you are making a point to avoid it. When people just throw it all aside and get pregnant it amazes me that they are surprised.
Actually, TTA in that respect has a high fail rate becuase that means you are not even paying attention to fertile signs and avoiding at certain times. If you are watching that, then you are not TTA with no BCP. NFP is birth control.
Rarely are people given credit for using NFP as efficient bc. And as far as surprise bfps, stupidity may be humorous but it doesnt amaze me. It does frustrate the hell out of me.

Pretty much everyone who realized I wasn't on the pill assumed we weren't trying very hard to not be pregnant. Truth was that we were still incredibly careful because DH was just not interested in/ready for kids at all until we started TTC... we just picked a non-hormonal path because BC pills screw me up pretty hardcore. If only we'd known that we weren't one of the "oops" couples anyway...
That said, if you're having sex, not keeping track of your cycle, and not using any preventative methods but hope, denial, or prayer- you're TTC.
Just saying you're TTA doesn't mean that you're not TTC.

I agree. If you aren't using any type of BC (NFP included), and you are sexually active, then I think you are TTC. You may be more or less successful depending on if you chart, time sex appropriately, etc, but you are still TTC in my opinion.

I said special snowflake because to me it's 2 and 3 -- TTC to me has a connotation of actively TRYING with the purpose of conceiving. If you aren't using any forms of BC than I think you're stupid if you don't think it might happen, but I don't consider it actually trying to get pg. I mean, the first piece of advice for those trying is to chart, not just to get off BC

I said special snowflake. TTC means to me doing thing to try and get pregnant. Not using BC to me is not necessarily TTC but more not TTA...KWIM?
I think of the 2nd and 3rd for all people....those that have trouble (do not have a textbook cycle) and charters.

I voted special snowflake, because we're just doing one and two. If it doesn't come as easily as we'd like, we'll start doing number three.
Right! Just because it isn't hormone birth control does not mean that it isn't a form of birth control.
