RSV ?

For those of you who have/had a baby with it... what symptoms were they having??

My LO has a kinda stuffy nose. I say kinda because he can breath through is but sometimes it "sounds" snotty. When I aspirate nothing comes out. And he sneezes occasionally throughout the day. But overall he seems content.

Re: RSV ?

  • Typically with RSV, they are congested, run a low-grade fever, have difficulty breathing (as in their lungs, not through their noses), sometimes a cough.

RSV is one of the viruses that causes the common cold.  In preemies/newborns/infants it is a whole lot worse then it is for older children and adults.  It can easily turn into bronchitis and/or pneumonia.

My middle son had this twice when he was an infant and it led the bronchitis the first time and pneumonia the second time.  Not fun at all!!

  • My lo had a stuffy nose and a bad (pitiful sounding) cough when he was diagnosed  w/rsv.  It was the chest congestion and his decreased appetite that the dr was most concerned with.  He did not have any fever though.
  • The above are correct.  Watch for how fast they are breathing.  If they are breathing over 60 a minute they are working too hard and should not be eating as they could get food into their lungs.  Also watch for flaring of the nostrils to show how hard they are working to breathe.  Don't take any chances.  Go to the dr. and get the nose swab to see if it is RSV.  There is nothing you can do about it, but you will know that you really need to be much more careful watching your LO for signs of distress than a normal cold.  We just got done spending 6 nights at Children's Mercy due to RSV.
  • A stuffy nose and coughing. After 4 days of coughing he started throwing up. My LO never ran a fever until I was running into the ER with him barely breathing in my arms. If your LO has a cough before he/she is 4 months old take them to the doctor immediatly.
