Does boob biting = time to wean?

I hardly ever watch this show but did today.  On The Doctors there was a question about what to do if you DC bites you during BF'ing.  Their answer was that this is your child's way of telling you they're ready to move on from the breast.  Perhaps you should plan to start weaning.

What do you guys think?

  • They say some crazy things sometimes on that show. I have a 3 month old who "bites" me sometimes - I really don't think he's ready to wean. I think biting is usually either a product of teething, or their idea of playing. I would think not wanting to nurse would be more of a sign that they're ready to wean.

  • Ali's been biting me for months (yes, I shudder to think what's going to happen when she finally gets teeth). I think it's ridiculous for them to say that it's a 3 (or 5 or 6 or 8) month old's way of saying they're done nursing. I think she does it because she bites everything. She's either been teething for a while now...or she's playing...or she's a biter (please let it not be the third option).

    This.

  • Also, she only tends to do it when she's done nursing and bored. Which leads me to believe it's more along the playing lines. I need to learn to pop her off before she gets bored.

  • Biting =/= ready to wean. That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.
  • Um no.  I know my child is only 2 months old but having 4 MUCH younger siblings and watching my mom, they all would bite at some point but by no means were they ready to wean.  I'm not a doctor but I definitely don't agree.
  • Bogus.  DS started "playing" early on, before he had any teeth and we still went on to nurse for months.
  • I think that's idiotic. Campbell's been biting since 4 or 5 months.

I think that's crap.  DS started biting when his teeth came in.  He did self-wean months later, and there was biting involved, but it was totally different.  He wouldn't latch at all, he would bite out of frustration, not pain or playfulness.  So, I don't think biting automatically means weaning, but there was biting in our weaning process.

I didn't see the show, but biting while nursing is common and it's just wrong to tell someone that mean their baby is ready to wean.

  • Ok, I was sure this would be the concensus on this board.  Every now and then I hear something on this show with regard to babies that I just think is odd.  I'm surprised because I think one of the doctors is a pediatrician who helped write The Baby Book, which is all about attachment parenting.  Odd.

  • What a weird thing for them to say!  That can be totally untrue....

I agree with everyone. The statement about Boob biting means time to wean is odd. But I also wanted to add that attachment parenting doesn't necessarily mean breastfeeding.

Maybe not, but it's definitely emphasized in the book as one of the key concept that makes up AP.  And this pedi helped write the book and yet didn't say anything in response to the biting = weaning statement.

I ended up watching it (I have it set to record), and I was surprised that he didn't say anything about it either. He did say that if the baby was "too young" to wean that another response to biting is to pull the baby closer rather than try to yank them off. I've heard that before and the way he explained it made sense.

That OB on there says some really nutty things sometimes. I remember another time she claimed that the pain of labor can kill women, and that is why they should get epidurals. I mean yeah, women can and do die from complications of childbirth, but from the pain alone? Doubtful.

LFMAO!! If pain alone could kill, men would drop dead from Kidney Stones and we'd mourn the loss of misjenn after what she went through with her jacked up gallbladder!

As for biting, Emily is already knawing on me. It is usually at the end of the feeding or when I'm offering her the boob when she probably isn't hungry. She doesn't know the difference between my boob and her pacifier. She loves to grind her gums on her paci already.

Just for clarification, the Dr Sears on the show is not the Dr Sears who co-wrote The Baby Book- it is his son. And while I think his dad is awesome, I think this son is a bit of an idiot.

My book says "with Robert Sears, M.D. and James Sears, M.D."  Is the James Sears not the one from the show?  Me = confused

  • It is, but I have yet to find a real contribution of his in the book (unless it is uncredited, which most are not). The kids did not help with the older versions at all.
