Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

s/o Nicknames

Joseph has always been Joseph. My husband doesn't like Joey, because he has a cousin Joey he can't stand. Joseph is named for my dad, who was always Joe, and that always seems like an older guy to me. And Joseph has always fit him perfectly.

Joseph talks a lot, but he hasn't been big on identifying himself. "Me!" and "Mine!" happen a lot, but he wouldn't say his name.

He has started now. Points to my husband and says "DADDY!" and me and says "Mama!" and then points to himself. "JOE!"

Sigh. He will always be Joseph to me. But it's adorable to hear him say it.

  • Aww.  So sweet that he's saying his name.  I'm very curious to see what Madeline starts to call herself.  I posted below that DH & I always call her Madeline, but most other people have shortened it to Maddie when they talk to her.

  • Aw, I love Joe for babies/toddlers. Ds is Joey because my dh is Joe as well as his dad. I used to call ds "baby Joe" I sometimes call him Joseph too. Dh is dying to call him Seph but I think that would be confusing and people would think his name is Seth! Anyway....that is really cute your ds calls himself Joe ;)
  • awww! that's sweet. and atleast Joe is part of his name. when i was a little girl i introduced myself to everyone as Annie.... ;)

  • that is too cute.  I love the name Joseph but unfortunately dh wont name any of our children after his college buddies since he doesnt want their egos to inflate-kidding of course.  So, out went Joseph, Charles, William...alot of good classic names imo.

Sam will point to himself and say Saw, which is cute since that is his initials and a nn dh has for him.

  • I'm married to a Joe.  His mother is the only person who calls him Joseph.  She said she never wanted him to be a Joe, but he chose that name for himself when he started school, and it just stuck.  That's how I was introduced to him, so that's what I've always called him.  She only calls him Joseph.

My ex's name was also Joseph, but he went by his first name Allen.  Only his family called him Joseph/Joe.  That was always kind of weird for me since I only knew him as Allen.

  • Aww - that's really cute.  I have the same thing.  DD's name is Katherine.  At school, they call her Kat because it's easier for the kids to say.  She now refers to herself as Kat.  Oh well.

  • How cute that he is saying (a version of) his own name!

We call Charles "Charlie" and so does everyone else. Well, sometimes Charles, but not regularly.

Elizabeth is about 50% Elizabeth and 50% Ellie. Our families have only called her Ellie. Oh, and Charlie calls her Yah-yo which is super adorable (even though now he can say Ellie, he doesnt). She decided she wanted to be Elizabeth at school which I was happy about. But sometimes her friends call her Ellie. But that's fine since that's the nickname WE picked for her. She may decide to go by something totally different some day, and that's fine I guess. But I'll always call her Elizabeth or Ellie :)

  • Too cute!

DD refers to herself as "Phee," which is just funny to me and DH. But she didn't used to call herself anything, so we'll take that one!

Her full name is Sophie, so it's not really nickname-friendly. Although my dad insists on calling her "Soph" -- like "sofa" without the "a."

    It drives me bonkers.
