Mine is seriously frustrating me lately. We only have carpet in our 3 bedrooms and office - but it is still driving me nuts. A toddler and a lab, and a husband that never likes to take his shoes off (sheesh) are making things worse. Sure we've had some vomit/mud/etc incidents - but mostly it's just that dingy worn look.
I'd love to take care of it and put it on our huge list of things to do once we're back on our feet financially. BUT, what do we do? I don't want to just clean it. It's a light beige color. I've thought about putting in a darker color - or maybe even a longer thread - kinda like a short "shag" look that is in a lot of model homes now.
I've thought about replacing it with wood/pergo - but then we'd have to get rugs too. And I could see us replacing the rugs after a while for the same reason that I hate the carpet now.
I just hate sitting on the floor in the carpeted rooms b/c the whole time I'm thinking "this stuff is disgusting". Heck, I don't even have to sit on the floor to think that.
Any advice or suggestions from people that hate their carpet?
Re: Do you HATE your carpet?
i do hate my current carpet, but i'm in the process of getting new carpet. i'm getting exactly what you're thinking of getting, a darker short shag (actually called frieze) to replace our light, almost white/yellow carpet full of pet stains and mud.
i thought about doing wood/laminate but it'd be stairs and our entire upstairs so i thought carpet would be better in those areas.
i don't have any real advice or suggestions other than to say i'm right there with you and i'm really looking forward to getting my new carpet.
DH and I have been trying for a long time to figure out how to afford to do the laminate wood flooring. I think we've finally gotten so fed up with the carpet that we're going to ask his parents to loan us the money to do the laminate. It'll be in the living room and hallways and we will leave carpet in the bedrooms. With two labs, a baby and two grown ups, plus we have regular get togethers with friends, our carpet is looking rather worn.
We got ours from Lowes for a great deal (installed). They're doing 12 months no interest right now also.

I love my carpet. We got a medium beige frieze (short shag), and I love it so far. The longer fibers really help, as does the color. We had a light beige in our last house, and it showed stains really bad, but the color we picked for the new house is dark enough to hide a lot, and light enough that it doesn't make the rooms dark. We also put in a spill proof pad, which makes clean up easier.

I highly recommend if you're reinstalling carpet to upgrade your padding. I forget what we got (Alpine?) but it's antimicrobial and hypoallergienic. It is more dense and has a plastic-y membrane on top to keep dirt and fluids from penetrating the padding. This in turn keeps all of the dirt at the surface to make it more vacuum-able and more easily clean spills. Bonus: it's more supportive than just flattening out when you walk on it as well.
I think it was a couple hundred dollars upgraded from standard padding for our new house w/ 3-bedrooms and a bonus room carpeted.
As much as I don't like carpet, I'm glad we have it in most of our house. When my daredevil toddler takes a header off the couch and ricochets her head off the floor I think "I'm so glad we don't have tile or hardwood!" Even when she bites it on the vinyl flooring I think it's a tad more forgiving than the other materials. When the girls are older, sure, I'd love a house without carpet but for now, I think it saves us a bunch of ER visits.
You'd be suprised by how good a professional cleaning can make your carpets look! We replaced the carpet you see in our living room downstairs but upstairs the carpet is about 10 years old. It probably needs to be replaced but it's good enough to keep for longer now that it's clean.
