Question re: recalls

I signed up for the recall updates from the Consumer Product Safety Commission - but if a company does a voluntary recall - do you still get an email?

Re: Question re: recalls

  • I'm signed up too, that's a good question.  Maybe call them?

  • If there is defect in a product within the CPSC's jurisdiction (and baby products generally are within CPSC jurisdiction) that creates a substantial product hazard (among other things) companies are required to report it to the CPSC.  More often than not, the result of that is a voluntary product recall conducted by the company in cooperation with the CPSC.  In my experience, it is uncommon for there to be a "non-voluntary" CPSC recall -- it looks pretty bad for companies to be refusing to recall a product when the CPSC says there is a safety concern.

If a company is conducting a non-safety related recall, it is unlikely the CPSC would be involved, and you would hear about that through other means.

If it is a safety-related recall, chances are you'll hear about it through the CPSC web alerts.

You might also want to sign up with NHTSA for alerts for child restraint recalls.  https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/subscriptions/index.cfm

Thanks!  That was actually a much more in-depth answer than I got from calling CPSC.
