Cheerios?

At what age is okay for LO to have them?  DS only gets one feeding of solids a day and I usually give him 5 oz of formula afterwards - it his nighttime feeding.

I'm wanting to introduce the sippy cup w/ Apple juice heavily diluted w/ water and thought maybe I'd include a snack as well.  Anyone have suggestions?

Re: Cheerios?

  • Avery hated puffs but loved cheerios. Go figure. I can't remeber exactly when we started but she was eating them when she was 8 months old. I think there are some resources that recommend no wheat products before 1 year but we do not have a history of allergies to gluten/wheat so I felt comfortable with it earlier

  • I haven't given him Cheerios yet, only because I'm paranoid about him choking on them. I wouldn't think twice about letting him try them because of the ingredients, though.

  • Thanks girls. I didn't really consider them a choking hazard.  I thought they reason parents went for them first was because they dissolve quickly in the mouth.  This gives me something else to consider now.
  • Try it... if he gags, he's not ready. :)

And I might recommend you try the sippy without juice first.  see what happens.  Avery drinks plain water 99% of the time if she's not drinking milk.  My thoughts are, if I can get a healthy habit in place now, then I won't have to battle her ONLY wanting juice (like my neice and nephews) later on.

  • My doctor said we could try them at 9 months. Abby's definitely not ready yet. She gags too bad...even with certain soft foods.

  • I think we probably started them around 8 or 9 months - I was a little afraid of the choke factor too.  One thing J loved (and still does) are the Gerber Wagon Wheels.  They are bigger, but to me that = less of a choking hazard b/c they can't swallow them whole.  Most kids just kind of gum/chew them and they are really light and fluffy and dissolve pretty quickly.

And, JMO, but I would also just first try water in a sippy.  Once some kids get used to that sweetness in juice (even if it's only a tiny bit) it's a hard habit to break.

  • Thanks for all of your responses ladies!  This definitely helps. I'll try the sippy cup with only water first.  He already won't drink water from the bottle but here's hoping it'll be different in the sippy!
