We bought "Where the Wild Things Are" for ds a few days ago on DVD- we didn't get a chance to see it while it was still in the theatre.
Now ds is sitting here next to me all worried and upset with lots of questions about how the sun is going to explode and eat up the Earth and our house and we're all going to die...
He looked at me with big sad eyes and said, "It really isn't a very happy movie, is it?"
Re: Effing Wild Things.
I love Miles.
And no, kiddo, it really isn't.

It never occurred to me that a movie adaptation of a beloved children's book would NOT be little kid appropriate!
Ds isn't easily scared and although I vaguely remembered hearing some controversy over the movie when it was in the theatre I wasn't too concerned since ds handles things like that just fine. I was kind of like, "Eh, no worries. He's not going to be scared about some big monsters. That's fine."
But, I didn't realize that the movie is really dark and almost depressing- it wasn't scary all. Just disturbing and unsettling. Not what we were expecting, I guess.
I got it OnDemand yesterday for Ashlyn and I to watch. OMG...not a happy movie at all. I'd never read the book. We didn't even finish it because she was getting too upset when they were all throwing dirt balls at each other.
Bad mommy for not reading the book first....
This. After I read the reviews that movie got when it came out, I decided there was NO way we were taking our 6 & 4 year old DDs to see it. It's too bad they couldn't have made it more kid-friendly since they kind of marketed it to kids.
Your dd will probably love the book. It's really nothing at all like the movie.
Check it out for yourself. They've added some music and sound effects into this, but otherwise they're just reading the story word for word:

The book actually scares my dd too.
