Should I switch to convertible car seats?

thanks to everyone on their car seat advice thus far...

Since I have to get new car seats anyways.. should I just switch to convertible ones?

Last appointment (3/2/10) DD was 13lbs 14oz, 24" / DS was 16lbs 5oz, 27"

When did you switch?

Can you think of pros / cons? (all I can think of are cons besides the money spent... how do you get them in and out of the car when they are sleeping etc..)

Thanks!

Re: Should I switch to convertible car seats?

  • We switched when the girls were 7 mths.  They were just getting too heavy for the infant carriers.  And sometimes if they fall asleep in the car and we bring them in, they will still stay asleep.  It amazes me but it happens.  My only problem is getting them in and out for daycare.  Good thing it is a house so I park in the driveway and they are there waiting for me.  But I love using the new car seats.

  • I am going to switch in April.  and my kids are 20 and 17 lbs (they are still within the limits of the carseat)!  But I live in Chicago, and I like having the bundle me's on the carseats, so I don't have to put huge jackets on them.  Plus, if you are carrying the kids to the car, it will be harder because where do you put them down to put the first one in the carseat?  It's nice now just being able to snap in the carseats in the stroller and go.  Rather than getting them out of the carseat, buckling them in and then having to put them back in the carseats after you are done.  Plus mine still sleep in the car a lot.

  • We didn't switch til they were about a year old. The infant seats were SOOOO much easier to deal with, even though they were heavy. We wanted to keep using them as long as we could.
  • I'm waiting as long as freaking possible this time.  I switched DS1 when he was around 6m because he was 18 pounds and I was worried that he'd outgrow it before I knew he was 22 pounds.  He didn't hit 22 pounds until he was almost 1.  The infant seat is SO much easier IMO.  I'd get the infant seats and sell them on CL or to someone in your MOTC when you're done with them (or you might be able to find some that you trust on CL or MOTC).  GL.
  • We switched at 7.5m. Alex was already just over 21 lbs so I figured we might as well. If the infant carriers are still working well for you I wouldn't switch yet.

I'd wait as long as possible.  The infant seats make things soooooo much eaisier.  I moved one DD up when she was about a year old becausing she was pushing the height/weight requirement, but my other DD is still in hers.  I think she's close to the height limit so I probably need to switch her too.  It was a very sad day when I had to retire the DSNG and it will be a sad day when I have to juggle two out of convertibles and into daycare!
