Hi ladies! It's me again. I'm really striking out in the doctor department, so I'd love your help. I've already called 4 docs that were referrals, 2 of which have retired, and 1 which won't see me on the first visit (I have to see a nurse and then get to see the doc on the second visit). The 4th I think is perfect for me, but their practice is so busy that they can't see me for a month or so, and I can't wait that long.
So, the one I'm really interested in is Drs. Campaigne and Sebeysten, and they have midwives associated with their practice. They are the ones I can't get in to see for a month, and I also asked them if they refer to other practices since they are so busy, and they said no.
Does anyone know of similar practices that have OB/GYNs who use midwives and focus on natural birth, other than birthing centers?
Thanks,
Amy
Re: ob/gyn practices that use midwives?
I don't go to that practice, but, from what I have read on here, they are the ONLY ob-gyn practice that allows midwives to deliver in the hospital. You are probably safe going ahead and making that appointment.
How far along are you? Unless you are already more than halfway through, you will have time to change practices if you are not happy with what you here there.
The practice that I go to--which I have been very happy with--is a bit more intervention-minded, but they do seem willing to work with you on your wants for pregnancy and birth. I had a very difficult time getting pregnant, though, and have had a prior miscarriage as well as a vanishing twin with this pregnancy. All the intervention that I thought I didn't want--meh, I feel a little more okay about it.
AFAIK, they are the only ones in town who use midwives. I went there just to get a birth control prescription, and while it was a good appointment, the office staff there is less than organized and not so polite.
You might also consider looking into a birthing center or homebirth if you're interested in midwives. My midwife, Kristen Elliott with Moms and Miracles, is currently not accepting new patients because she's 23 weeks pregnant, but based on her recommendations, I'd highly recommend Heart of Texas Midwives or Patty Sprinkle with Custom Birth. Patty was the backup midwife at my birth, and she was wonderful. I switched from Dr. Seeker to Kristen at about 24 weeks. I went to Austin Perinatal Associates (arranged by Kristen) for ultrasounds.

I also go to WPIH. My ob is Dr. Yium, but Dr. Oliver delivered my son and Dr. Nash delivered my daughter. I had med-free births both times. I also saw my OB at each appt. unless I chose to see the NP. In my experience they were supportive of my med-free birth, but not especially encouraging. It was a very hands-off experience once I was in labor, but I guess that's a good thing. I would have loved to have had a midwife or someone who was more focused on Mom and more of a cheerleader. We wanted to birth in the hospital (Seton) so midwives were not an option for us. I hired a doula for #2. Having an OB that didn't push for interventions and a doula by my side were a good combo for me.
I believe the practice I go to now has mid-wives - as I know I've seen signs about it in the waiting room. It's not on their website yet though but I've been very pleased w/ them for several years and highly recommend the practice overall. https://obgyngroupofaustin.com/index.php They are located in Central Austin.
