Anyone who gets/got p17 injections....

For the past two weeks my husband has given me the shots like normal on Friday night. By Sunday the injection site is very itchy, no rash, but it feels like a small flat lump under the skin, kind of like a mosquito bite and itches like crazy. Any one else experiencing this? I go to the Peri on Friday so I'll mention it then. We'll see. I'd be too afraid if they wanted me to stop them.

  • I have the same thing happen to me.  The medication is super thick and can cause a hard knot to form until it's absorbed.  The itching is probably a minor allergy.  My OB told me to take benadryl if it gets bad, but it makes me too sleepy.  I just end up scratching off and on for a couple days after.  I don't think your doc would take you off them for minor reaction, but I'd tell them at your next appt.

  • I get the injections and I haven't had that problem. However, when I first started them the nurse told me that could be a side affect and it is common reaction.
  • Sounds good and logical. Thanks girls. I'll mention it to the nurse on Friday.
  • I am taking them and will have my 9th injection tomorrow. This same thing happened to me for the first time last week (a hard lump slowly resolved after 5 days and a moderate itch at the injection site). I called the dr office today and informed the nurse just to get feedback. She told me to go ahead and do it this week, and see if I have this same type of reaction. She said that some people are allergic to one of the ingredients in the compound and that if it happens again the dr will decide what to do about it (possibly stop it).

Before I had started taking them, I posted a question here about the side effects and many nesties said that the itch was common. I don't remember anyone saying anything about a lump though. Anyhow, I'm worried that they will take me off of the shots as well. This is scary b/c after all, it's the only intervention there is =(.  the nurse said that if it is a reaction that it can get worse so I guess that's not good either. has anyone else heard that this could be a possible allergic reaction??

  • i haven't had this but my nurse told me when we started them that if i ever had a reaction like that we would lengthen the time she administers the shot by 1-2 minutes. how long does he take to inject it now? mine currently gets injected over a period of 2-3 minutes.
  • I asked my friend about this who is a pharmacist in the icu. She said rather than an allergy, it sounds more like the medication isn't getting absorbed into the muscle well enough. Lengthening the time it takes to administer seems rational to me as well. I think I'll take it and have the nurse give it to me on Friday and see if I get the same reaction. Maybe DH is just rushing.
  • thanks for the info! I had my hubby give the shot to me really slow tonight so we'll see what happens.
