I called his family doc and because of privacy laws the nurse wasn't able to tell me a ton obviously.  But she thinks an ER visit is in order at this point.

methinks it's gonna be a long night.

I'm sorry, Kori.  It's got to be dealt with at some point.   I really hope things work out.  I know you really love your FIL, and I hope you can find a way to help him.

My MIL was dealing with something similar with her mother a couple years ago.  She is heavily addicted to pain killers because of back issues that started a long time ago.  Was out driving while she was higher than a kite and they didn't know what to do.  They check her into the ER, and from there she was sent to the psych ward.  The released her the next day.  I couldn't believe it!  It's like, what are they supposed to do with her?  They had sent her to treatment several times and nothing changed, yet when she gets pulled over for driving under the influence they call her kids.

It has been a vicious cycle and unfortunately she is probably going to end up killing herself or someone else because nobody can take care of or handle her and no facility will keep her.  She just keeps going to different doctors and they all give her drugs.  One doctor even had a pain med pump installed in her!
