Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DS had his EI eval this morning

His cognitive ability, gross motor skills, receptive language and social are all right on track.

He is being referred to an Occupational Therapist for further evaluation for his fine motor skills. He is also being referred for his expressive speech. Unfortunately, because he is 17.5 months he had to be tested under the 12-17 month range. Once he gets to 18 months he will be extremely delayed verbally (under the standardized test criteria). If they don't approve him he cannot be evaluated for another 6 months.

Keep your fingers crossed for us please.

What is he delayed in?  Speech??

My guy still doesn't talk---he says mama, daddy, baby, bottle (sort of), tries to say kitty.  We're working on birdy right now.  I just think he's not interested.  I know the pedi will want us to get an evaluation but the men on my DH's side talk late......so I'm not surprised.

Yes, he is delayed in expressive speech. Right now he says daddy and something that sounds like here regularly. His other words (if I have even heard them correctly) are hit or miss. The speech therapist was concerned and says she is definitely referring him. Now its just up to the county on whether they will see him as delayed (because hes 17.5 months and not 18 months).

ETA: The speech therapist put him at the verbal level of a 10-11 month old Sad

  • Good luck!

    Best of luck!

Have explored private speech therapy?  We were able to get our insurance company to cover some private PT/OT before EI kicked in.

You might be able to work with your Pedi to finesse the dx to what the insurance will cover.

We haven't. I should, and will, definitely look into that. Our caseworker said the EI should kick in within the next couple of weeks. Is your LO receiving private services as well as EI?

We did do private initially-but it was a birth injury so this is a ways back.

Thankfully my BFF is an EI SLP, so she knew about intake and the wait times.   DS has an arm issue, so it's OT/PT but the intake and procedural stuff is the same.

We contacted just about EVERYONE in the world on his second day of life to figure out how to get him a therapist asap.  It took a day, but he started therapy when he was 4 days old.  I am of the opinion that sooner is better, but speech issues don't have the "window of opporunity" issues that nerve injuries do, so don't feel like you have to get it done today.

We overlapped private and EI for about 2 months.   Both therapists did the same stuff almost.  No appreciable difference in the quality of care, but we live in an area with a very good EI service provider.

Thanks. I think I'll give his Pedi a call in the morning. I would love to overlap and get him all the help I can. Thank you for your advice!

  • What are the criteria if you don't mind me asking?  My DS sounds pretty much like yours.

DS was at the very low end of normal in the 12-17 month range with two regularly used words. I believe the range of scores for normal was 85-117 (or something) and he was at 87. Once he hits 18 months his score will drop to 66.

The best advice I can give is to get your DS referred to EI as soon as possible. Depending on your county it could take forever for an evaluation. DS was referred to EI on January 23 and just finally received his eval this morning.

  • I wouldn't go overboard beyond the services for occupational and speech they provide. at this point,  it doesn't sound necessary for private speech but that's only from personal experience with 2 people I know.

My sister is a speech therapist- her son had very poor expressive skills and couldn't sit still and play with things. They started with an occupational therapist and speech. When I say poor- he didn't say one word until after he was 2 consistently. Not mama, NOTHING.

At 2 years and 2 months, his speech exploded. He is now 2 years and 3 months and speaks in short sentences.

Therapy helps but sometimes they are delayed just because they are delayed and nothing is really wrong at all.

They weren't worried because he understood everything.

  • We brought DS to his 15 month appointment late at almost 17 months. He uses maybe 5 words (and isn't really gaining new ones), but he signs and understands words (he can point to almost everything in a book/picture if you ask him to show you).  Our pedi didn't seem worried at all.  I was just wondering if there was a standard that pedi's go by or if it's subjective.  I guses it wouldn't hurt to ask at his next appointment.

  • Ditt IE's advice.  Our pedi referred us to Easter Seals and it was covered by our insurance.  I know that Easter Seals also has programs available for people who don't have insurance for EI.  You might want to contact Easter Seals and your health insurance company to find out what your options are if the county doesn't work out for you. GL!

  • Wow...I'm an EI speech path, your criteria must be way different from OK! Here he would have been tested at 18 mo since he is over 17 mo and you could refer back tomorrow if you wanted to.
