High-Risk Pregnancy

Insulin question

Actually 2 questions: 1. If you take it out with you, what do you put it in? I am on R for dinner, so ill need to take that at a wedding 2.When do you stop taking insulin? You take it up until you give birth?

Re: Insulin question

  • I use a pen system and it came in a little carrying case that looks kind of like a hard glasses case.  I just pop that in my purse.  I believe you stop taking it when you give birth, hopefully permanently.

  • are you on one that needs to be refrigarated? My grandmother is and just tucks it in a small insulated lunch bag with an ice pack.I am not on insulin as of yet but had one super high pre-lunch reading this week that is going to kill my averages and my averages are starting to run a bit close for after meal times so I may be in this boat next week.

I am not sure when you stop taking it, I would think if you are BF they may keep you on it for a bit depending on where your blood sugars are at but a lot of women with GD go back to being not diabetic pretty soon after the baby comes so hopefully you are very lucky and don't have to stay on for too long.

  • I'm type 1 diabetic- if I take it with me I'll either stick it into a little insulated clutch (sometimes you can find these at Wal-Mart or Walgreens or ask your OB if she has any that come with samples) or (if I'm not going out for that long, like 2 or 3 hours) I'll just stick it in a pocket of my purse and make sure it doesn't sit in sunlight.

Normally with gestational, the end of your pregnancy (when baby is born) is when it goes away. But they'll watch you and baby closely. Be sure to ask your doc- he/she might ask you to ask least check your blood sugars for a few more weeks.

    Hope that helps!

  • I had the pen, and I had a little Vera Bradley wristlet that worked perfect for my meter and pen.  I just used that.

I had a scheduled C-section, so I stopped taking it at dinner the night before.  Since I wasn't able to eat, my dr advised not to take my evening dose.
