**Isabella22**

Hey! I just saw your post for the circ questions. I wanted to respond (and I'm not trying to scare you I promise!) but I didn't think you would go back and see it now.

My advice for you, if you are delivering at a teaching hospital. Make sure that you request that a resident student isn't doing the circ. I would go as far and to even not sign the circ release until you speak to the actual Dr. that will be doing his circ. I learned this after my DS#2 was circ'ed in the hospital. I would of NEVER thought that a 1st year med student would be doing it. I did tell all the nurses repeatedly and even when they came to get him for the actual circ that I wanted them to check and make sure he didn't have hypospadias (DS#1 had this and couldn't be circ'ed in the hospital; he had to have surgery to fix it and be circ'ed at 9 months)

Anyway DS#2 had been gone for a while (longer than I thought it would take) and it was getting close to time for him to eat (I was breastfeeding). So I called the nursery to ask about him and they said that the Dr. was coming in to see me. Well he came in and said that during the circ they had "nicked him" and they were waiting on the urologist to get out of surgery to come take a look. They said he MAY need 1 stitch. My first response (I was still in shock at this point and at the hospital by myself, DH and just went home to check on DS#1 and take a shower), was so since you did the circ he doesn't have hypospadias right? The Dr. then said "oh well now that you mention it, he may have a small bit of hypospadias." That's when I learned the nurses never told him (like I requested numerous times) to make sure they checked for that before doing the circ. That's why I say to wait and sign the release until you actually speak to the Dr. that will be doing the circ.

Anyway, the urologist gets out of surgery - goes to check on DS#2 and comes to talk to me. He said that he did have to put in some stitches and he would have to have surgery to repair the damage and finish the circ (they only did 50% of it). Finally a few hours later I got to see DS - DH was back at this point. The whole time I was told that it wasn't bad at all. So I got him and take of his diaper to see this "nick" - OMG - he had 12 stitches and his poor penis was black and blue and swollen so badly. I cried forever - I couldn't believe it. It. was. bad.

I kept asking questions trying to figure out what happened, but no one would really give me answers - like straight answers. So I got his medical records for the hospital after we were released. That's when I found out it was a 1st year med student who did the circ. -- he was being taught by a 2nd year med student. The Dr. I talked to who said he did it, wasn't even in the room.

Anyway - like I said - I'm not trying to scare you into not circ'ing your child. I'm just trying let you know to make sure you know exactly who is doing it.

I work at a Dr. office and all of the med students do their family practice rotation through out office - dude that butchered my son will be there in 6 weeks... I will have a few questions for him...

  • Ummm...holyshit! That is awful! Thank God my OB and Pedi did DS's circ. I imagine they will both do DS2. I would be furious if I had been you. That is inexcusable!

  • Wow!  That is horrible.  Thanks for the tip.  My OB gave me a recommendation of a very good urologist to do it and we will be with him to make sure that it is that Dr that does it!

I hope your son is ok now?

  • Yeah, I was under the impression my Pedi did it. Because when they took him it was so the Pedi could do his rounds and check on all the babys and then they would do the circ. I guess I just assumed that's who was doing it.

The surgery to fix it was even worse. The Dr. was 2 hours and 45 min late (Dexter had been screaming for over an hour at this point because he couldn't eat (really drink anything) after midnight and the Dr. finally showed at 10:45am. Then it took them an hour to get his IV in and finally they got to do the surgery. The surgery itself went fine, which I was glad about. Then we got home and at 1am he started crying/whining making some really strange noises and felt REALLY hot. So I took his temp. 102.5. I paged the Dr. and he called me back and said to give him so Motrin and wait 30 min if i still didn't go down take him to the ER and he would call and let them know we were coming. 30 min later it was 103. I was freaked thinking something was wrong with him since he had just had surgery that morning. So we rushed him to the ER and they said that the Dr. had called and got us right back. They said he had a double ear infection, but everything else looked fine. So we started giving him the anitbiotics. Those didn't work and we ended up back at the ER over the weekend a couple of times.

It was just the start of a LONG few months. I think over the next 2 months he had 6 double ear infections. All which ended up requiring 3 shots of rocephin to get rid of, and all of which had a 104 temp to go along with them. He ended up getting tubes and still has ear infections once a month since then.

Yeah... I know that the surgery didn't make him have ear infections. But it's just crazy that he was a perfectly healthy child and fine until the day he had surgery.
