Solids - what's next?

So I'm a little confused about what happens next. Today was day 4 of rice cereal. DD did really well, and seemed to grasp the concept of the spoon pretty quickly. She seemed to like the rice cereal, too. Do I move on to oatmeal? What do I do with the rest of the rice cereal? Thanks for any advice!

Re: Solids - what's next?

  • We moved to sweet potatoes, applesauce, peaches, carrots, blueberries, bananas, etc. after a few days of the cereal.  DS would get constipated on rice, so we switched to oatmeal and gave it to him for breakfast on the weekends (daycare does b'fast on weekdays).  Sometimes I mix it with a fruit puree to make it more exciting.  Right now you can just experiment with diff. foods and see what she likes/dislikes.

  • Yes, it should be fine to move on to oatmeal. I was slow introducing solids, so some people might have different advice...but we alternated rice and oatmeal cereal for several weeks before moving on to "real" food.

And as far as what to use the rest of the rice cereal for, we used to mix with lots of other foods. The rice cereal is really good for them (lots of iron) so I'd mix it with applesauce or some other fruit/veggie puree.

  • You should be introducing new foods every 4 or 5 days (or - maybe your doc has a different recommendation?).

Keep feeding the rice cereal, and add to the repetoire.

Some things DD liked at first were sweet potatoes, bananas, squash, and avocado.

  • we tried all the cereals, started with rice, than oatmeal, barley next, then i think we did a mixed grain for a while. i think (its been a while now!) we did about a week or so of each one (sometimes longer, i wasn't in a huge hurry), and then once i was sure he wasn't having reactions to any of them, i would just alternate which one he ate until i emptied the containers. after we finished off all the boxes of cereal, i stuck with the multigrain or oatmeal only (as far as cereals go) and started working on the vegatable purees.

  • Yeah, hold on to the rice cereal, because you may end up mixing it in (after you've mixed it with water or BM or formula) with other foods to bulk them up.

This is what we've been doing. C generally has a little fruit in the am (apples, pears, bananas) and veggie with cereal in the pm (we're up to peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, green beans). He only gets a heaping tablespoon of veg with probably 1/2 tsp cereal and splash of milk.

  • This is a lot further down the road, but to use up all of the leftover cereal, I use it in place of some of the flour when I make pancakes and muffins for DD.

Like PP, I started cereal about 2 weeks before you and introduced one a week until she was 6 months.

At your stage, I would mix fruit and veggie purees half and half with rice cereal to give the food more body as she became more and more adept at eating.

  • I am still working on the rice cereal.  My pedi said to then do veggies (green, yellow, then red??) and do fruit last (so they don't get addticted to the sweet stuff).

I know there are a million different opinions out there!!!
