Re: if your dc needs glasses
DD is wearing glasses right now, but it may be temporary - we'll see. We noticed her eyes crossing intermittently at first around 1 year old. We took her to the eye doctor at 15 months and again at 18 months, but they wouldn't cross in her office and she sent us away. They got worse and started crossing very consistently and we took her to a different doctor. That doctor saw the crossing immediately and we started patching to try to strengthen her eyes. After 4.5 months of patching with no results we went back to the original Dr. for a surgical consult because the other doctor had ruled out glasses as being a good solution in D's particular case. For various reasons, we switch Drs. again. The doctor she sees now will hopefully be her eye doctor through childhood. He performed surgery for her strabismus (eye crossing) on Feb 18th. Since then, she has been patching and wearing a set of glasses to help strengthen her eyes. The glasses are for working her muscles, not for visual acuity. On vision tests she took with a previous doctor her vision was quite good and she had no need for prescription lenses. This doctor will evaluate how long she might need to wear the glasses at her appointment this Thursday. But she may need another surgery as well. We'll see.
I hope this helps. I don't know if you're noticing crossing, or something that would indicate a visual impairment or what.
Both MH and his brother had ambylopia, diagnosed when they were young. Since this seems to be genetic, we got both our DD's eyes checked initially when they were 14mos and 2.5. They wanted to follow up on our oldests in 1 year. So we did and it turned out that she seems to have it too, one eye was 20/20 and one was 20/25. Which is actually great sight for this age, they typically see 20/30 when they're between 3-5ish. Anyway because they are seeing the same they said we could do glasses or just recheck in 6mos. We opted for the glasses in an attempt to preserve her vision and strengthen her bad eye.
She got them at Thanksgiving and we just rechecked them and she's 20/20 in both eyes. Hopefully, she'll eventually get out of glasses at some point this year. They said we can be more lax about them now, give her more time off but she doesn't mind them much so I just leave them on her. I figure the more they're on the better.
She definitely didn't want them and the first day or so was a struggle. After that, she'd leave them on but if you ask her she'll tell ya she doesn't like them and doesn't want to wear them. She still feels that way but fortunately never gives me a problem.
