Dropping food on the floor

Everything I put on her highchair tray ends up on the floor.

How on earth do I get her to stop doing this????

she will grow out of it especially if it is just a non-issue.  If minimal attention is directed at it, the clean up is uneventful, and you don't have a reaction to speak of, it will go away after she grows out of the fascination of it.

in the meantime, I suppose less food on her tray at a time and stopping offering food once she starts dropping it will decrease it.

  • My DS does this every single night at dinner.  It isn't because he doesn't like the food, but he likes the reaction our dogs give him when he drops food.  We had to start putting our dogs in the other room when we feed DS.  He still drops food and waits for our dogs to come running, but I'm hoping he will stop doing this soon.  lol
  • DS use to do this all the time.  We started offering him a plate that we kept on the table and when he didn't want something on his tray anymore we would incourge him to put it on the plate. Now he is pretty good about putting it ona plate or handing it to us.  Also, once he is done eating he picks up what he threw on the floor.  This wouldn't have worked at first because it was a mess but now it is usually just a piece or 2 if any and he will pick it up and hand it to us.

  • We started asking DD to take, "Nice bites" and she'll usually put it in her mouth.

She will start dropping food and we'll warn her.  One more time and the tray goes away but if we're not finished with our meal she stays in her high chair.  Kinda like a food time-out.

  • DD grew out of this a few months ago. I just didn't react when she did it and it stopped after a few months. I also had to do the same thing with spitting out drinks.

  • Hi Tracie!  Hope you guys are doing great!  When Mc started doing this and refusing to eat any of it, we thought it might be time she join us at the table.  So we ditched the tray and just pulled the high chair up to the table and gave her a plate.  Now barely anything goes on the floor.  Currently we are working on NOT dumping the plate on the table when she is finished.  :)  Good luck!

  • Just ignore it - she'll grow out of it.  Kiddo has really stopped throwing food at all - I'm pretty surprised because he loved the dogs' reaction but I guess he just got over it!

Personally, I think any sort of negative response (like taking food away, saying "no", etc) just encourages it as they are interested in any sort of response and can't really tell between "good" and "bad" responses at this age.
