I thought it was an exercise class...but a fb friend just posted some pictures that make me think it's more of a competition? I've seen it mentioned here so thought I'd ask!

It's awesome - that's what it is! :-) It's what a lot of police academy's and military use. One of the co-owners of my site is in the Army. Basically think boot camp-style workouts. Using your own body weight, ring dips, pull ups, push ups, kettle bells, etc. There is also cardio - running, box jumps, jumping rope, etc. Everything is scaled to fit the person...so it's not just for the advanced athletes.
I've been doing it since late Decemeber and am addicted. MH just started two weeks ago and he's drinking the kool-aid now too.
It is a program that works on strength and conditioning. I like it
because you do something different everyday - some days you do
weightlifting, some days cardio, sometimes both. It is a really hard
workout every single day. As for the competition, there are CrossFit 'Games' and some
exercises you have to do for time so some people post their times on
the forums to see who has the best.
I read a little bit on it. Do you basically have to join a crossfit gym/program to do it? Unless I can hang a rope in my livingroom, some of the exercises could be tough
It's the best thing EVER! I've been doing it since October and have lost 20lbs so far.
The owner of my gym is also a full time fireman. It's a way of working out that uses functional movement but at high levels of intensity.
Like yesterday our workout was 5 rounds, 1 minute each of the following:
wall balls with 15lb wall ball jump rope push ups
My guy also uses a lot of Olympic style weight lifting in his WODs (workout of the day). It's super cool and I'm totally geeked out on it. I will never workout another way again.

We
use our garage. We have a weight set and did have to do get a little
creative with some of the exercises. We both had pretty good results
with it though.
Is there a video to follow or just a schedule of exercises to do?
I pay to workout at a CF facility, so they make up the workout schedules. They have their own blog that I follow too, if I were to miss a class. I'm going three days a week now. I pay 8 weeks at a time. Right now, I'm paying $200 for 8 weeks.
Adult: Drop in: $25/visit (drop-in fees are cash only to expedite registration) $150/month (includes 12 consecutive month commitment) $175/month (includes 6 consecutive month commitment) $225/month (pay as you go)

It really depends on where you go. I get access to 3 trainers, two hours, 3 times a week for roughly $100 a month. In my eyes, that's a deal. And, I'm getting results like I've never gotten anywhere else.

Dougsgirl - there is Crossfitkids. https://www.crossfitkids.com/
You should check in your area to see if your area has one.
