Postpartum Depression

My mother must have had PPD

I've been trying to talk with her in the mornings when she comes to take care of J about the overwhelming emotions, stress and anxiety I've been feeling and all I get from her is a hardy, "That's how mothers are supposed to feel."

Re: My mother must have had PPD

  • Our mother's are from a generation where PPD was not spoken about - it was something to hide. I'm sure a lot of women suffered unnecessarily because of it. My mother was the same way with me. It sucks, but I had great support in my dh and friends that made up for it - I hope you do too!

  • It does sounds like she did.  But PP is right, it probably is that "generational difference"...no one would have ever wanted to talk about it then.  And of course, depression does have a hereditary tendency.

My mother admits to me that she thinks she has experienced depression, but that she was never treated for it.  It's wonderful that you are getting treatment so that you can be the mom you want to be!
