High-Risk Pregnancy

w...t...f...

16 weeks - u/s showed that I had a low lying placenta
20 weeks - u/s showed that the low lying placenta had resolved
32 weeks - admitted into the hospital for heavy bleeding; diagnosed with complete placenta previa; put on strict bed rest until delivery
33 weeks - u/s showed no change--still complete placenta previa
35 weeks - u/s showed a low lying previa, complete previa had resolved; all restrictions lifted

Does this sound right to you? Keep in the mind the same tech did all of these except week 32's.

A placenta doesn't bounce around, so is it really possible that the low lying placenta at 16 weeks resolved itself at 20 weeks only to turn into a complete previa by 32 weeks, or was the complete previa missed the first time around? It makes me nervous to trust this sudden diagnosis from complete to resolved in only two weeks when the resolved diagnosis I received the first time around was wrong.

What do you think?

  • As your uterus grows it does look like it is moving all over.  The likelihood of a complete previa at the time of delivery is extremely rare.  In these last few weeks your uterus is getting so big that it probably moved the previa out of the way completly.

I think my hesitation is that it went from low lying to resolved to complete (which my OB says she's never seen before, because placenta's don't move back down after they move up). The chances of complete previa resolving itself after 32 weeks goes down significantly, so the fact that the it went from complete to resolved in two weeks has me scratching my head, especially since the tech has been wrong before. My OB isn't 100% convinced. She kept my c-section date and wants another u/s in two weeks.

  • I would request a different u/s tech for your next one.  That doesn't seem right at all.

  • yeah...that is not right. the placenta does NOT move back down to be a complete after resolving a low-lying. The fact that you had bleeding means that you likely do have previa.  It is also unlikely for a complete previa to resolve that late. I am with your OB...don't trust that tech.  Good Luck!
