Cats and Babies..help?

I have a 1 year cat that we have raised from a 2 month old kitten. I love her to death, but now that I am PG I am a little nervous about bringing home baby, and how kitty will react...does anyone have any imput or advice regarding cats and newborns? I am 4 months right now so I have a little while until delivery, but I don't want to upset the cat, but if worse comes to worse I will have to give my kitty away Sad...help, please

Re: Cats and Babies..help?

  • I don't personally have a cat, but I have plenty of family and friends who were in a simialr situation as you.  Some overreacted and just gave the cat away and others first saw how it all played out.  In the instances where they kept the cat, everything turned out fine.  The cat would look at the baby curiously, but never attacked the baby.  Many just made the nursery an off limits area for the cat.

I have a dog and I have no intention of getting rid of him.  He thinks he's my baby and is definitely prone to jealousy.  With that said, I've had him around other babies and he's fine.  In fact, he's completely disinterested.  If you are still in doubt, see how your cat is around other babies?  That should give you an idea.

    Good luck!

  • I could never imagine getting rid of my cat b/c he is my first baby!

Like pp, we have made the nursery off limits to him! The door is open to that room but we gate it with a baby gate..The few times he has followed me or my hubby in we have chased him out.He now knows that room is off limits!

My vet said to try and keep his schedule the same even after the baby comes home...Since we let him sleep with us now she said to make sure he continues to sleep with us etc..If i am holding the baby she encouraged us to have my  husband or someone in the house pay attention to him if he is around and looks neglected..GL!

  • we have a cat that is a lil over a year old. this is our first child but the cat is very much our baby. my BF was very worried but other parents have told us to just make sure we don't neglect kitty and to make the baby room a no fly zone... i think it will work out just fine...
