How well does your 2y/o drink from a regular cup?

I'm wondering if I am behind with DS on this. My kids both use straw cups at all times, as a matter of fact, I just tossed all the sippies like 3 weeks ago. DD can drink from a regular cup, she just isn't presented with the situation often to do it. DS has really had no exposure to this. I just gave him a regular cup with a bit of water because DD wanted some and more of it ended up on his shirt than in his mouth. Should I be working on this with him more or is 2 y/o still on the young side for this?

  • the only reason my DS can is because daycare does it.  One day I was out of sippy cups so I did give him about an inch of drink in a cup and he drank it with no problem...thanks to daycare.  Now I give him some drink without the lid but only at the dinner table.

  • According to the developmental checklist I was just given by our pediatrician they should be able to do this at 2.  My guys can do this, but I always work on this from the time they take solids.  I do regular cups at meals and straw cups the rest of the time.  I can handle the mess if its just water :)
  • DS can, but like pp, only because of daycare.  They started them on regular cups a long time ago, around 18 months or so.  We use sippy cups at home, but he drinks from a regular cup at daycare.  Sometimes he'll ask for a regular cup at home, and he does really good with it.  But if it weren't for daycare, we probably wouldn't be doing it at all.

  • DS could at 2 for sure but that was because I was sick and tired of the sippies taking over my counter so I started him on regular cups early.

  • My dd was 3yo before she could drink from a regular cup.  It was always easier for me to give her a straw cup, so I never bothered with a regular one.  Then she started preschool and I was panicked about how she would drink at snack time without a straw.  She figured it out in a day.
  • Both my kids drink from regular cups for meals with their milks.  I think DD#2 started maybe 6 months ago or less.  They do really well with it, but it just takes time and practice.  They definitely didn't do well the first few times using it.
  • Wonderfully - she will 2 on Sat.  At daycare, the toddler 1 room, which my DD moved into at 16 months, works really hard with the kids on using real cups.  She had it down pat in a month or two.  At home for meals, she only gets real cups.  I do give the girls straw cups to use when taking water with us or for having around the house when we are playing.  The only time DD gets a sippy cup is for her morning and bedtime milk but I am about to toss those and she is going to have a mjor fit.  It will be way, way, way harder than getting rid of the bottle.  We have been slowly giving her her milk in a straw cup and she always asks for the sippy but we don't give in.  I just need to take the time to toss the sippy's!!

  • dc can,  no sippies at the dinner table since last summer.  but he uses a straw sometimes too.  but we only have the spill type sippies for in the living room .... and even then, dh is bad about using them (that can be messy at times).
  • Completely. She is only 20 mo, but has been drinking out of a regular cup since before her first birthday. I guess it is just because that is what I give her. She had to suck so hard on her sippies that I felt bad for her and started her on regular cups early. Only problem is that she dumps them out on her tray to signal that it is the end of her meal, so I never put very much in the cups at any one time.
