receiving blankets - how many?

Hey girls.

Had my first shower yesterday (the largest one) and did really good. I was amazed at how generous people were!  I dont think I have ever said "thank you" so much in a two hour time period. :-)

Anyways,

I received a TON of receiving blankets and was curious if I should try and return some (w/o receipts) or keep them just in case - I guess I can always re-gift the packages I dont open.

So, how many is a normal amount that you actaully NEED? We live in a three bedroom house, so we are trying to keep only what we really need.

Thanks!

Re: receiving blankets - how many?

  • I'm right there with you we have a ton of blankets!  Everyone keeps telling me we'll use every last one.

  • We use receiving blankets for:

    1. In the car seats- I have a total of 4 that I rotate

    2. As burp clothes-  They work really good to put over your shoulder, especially if you have a baby that spits up alot.  and then if they don't spit up on it, I just lay the blanket under their head while they play.  I have about 8 that I use for this

We used the blankets to swaddle at the very beginning but I quickly switched to the Swaddlemes and love them.

  • Okay, so it sounds like I should probably hang on to them. :-)

  • Good to know. I have a ton and still have another shower.  It seems people are sticking blankets into every package.  I figure I can use the smaller ones as burp cloths and the larger ones on the floor for play time.

  • I don't use receiving blankets all that often.  We use them in the car seats but that's about it.  I think we have 4 in rotation that we actually use.

I got 400 million larger blankets at my shower that I have no clue what to do with.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • We used 2 maybe for one child.  I guess you'd use them more in the car if you drove but DS was born in the summer and we don't really drive.  We would use them in his stroller when we were walking outside.  We never used them in our actual house- not to swaddle and not for feedings and such.
  • my neighbor said she used the blankets as a protective layer on her changing table pad. that way when there was a leak/blowout/accident she just threw the blanket in the wash instead of the whole changing pad cover.

my guess is there will be a lot of body fluid situations on the horizon and using anything at hand, including a blanket, won't be out of the realm of possibility. we live in a small rowhouse, so i know what you mean about only keeping the necessities but i'd rather have more blankets and not need them than need them and not have them.

  • we've gotten a million, plus lots of larger blankets (like kimarino said). We've just decided to keep them all and hope they get used. I'm planning on having a little basket in each room of the house, in the car, and in the diaper bag with a couple of blankets, burp cloths, diapers, wipes, etc. I figure if I distribute them around I won't realize how many I have! :)

  • with ds I had tons of receiving blankets.....I used them for various things, rolling up for carseat support, burp clothes ( I know, I know they make burp clothes but the receiving blankets were everywhere so they became 'my' burp cloth lol), blankets for warmth, cover for carseat on rainy/windy day, cover in stroller to keep sun out of eyes, use under ds when he was in floor gym...he was always spitting (reflux) so this kept me from washing the floor gym a million times.

I am sure there are more that I can't think of right now but I remember when he was 3 or 4 months old, I went and bought MORE receiving blankets, lol!!

I could never have enough of those or bibs!

  • I was just telling my husband that we now have at least 35 receiving blankets!  Because people got fancy with their wrapping- i.e. removing the packaging- we have to hand on to them.  I think I'll see them together when they're bigger to make them toddle quilts...

I am however returning some of the 65 washcloths we got and 20 hooded towels. :)

  • i loved using these to swaddle.  then when the girls got bigger, i still wanted to swaddle, so went out and bought bigger swaddling blankets.

i imagine my girls will use some of these blankets as they get older to play with dolls, to snuggle with, and who knows what else.  i know i have too many.

like pp said, washcloths... uggh - too many!!  if you do laundry at least every third day, there is no need for 30 wash cloths... and hate ones that have embroidery - not helpful with tender skin.  ooops, got a little OT - sorry.
