1st Trimester

Hair Color in First Trimester?

I just found out I'm pregnant...about 5 weeks. I'm in desperate need of hair color from a disaster blonde to brown change I did for winter, and now so ready to go back to blonde. I've heard highlights are ok, because unlike full color, they don't saturate your scalp. Has anyone heard this too, or do you think it's ok to get highlights in my first trimester?

Re: Hair Color in First Trimester?

  • I specifically asked my OB and he said there is no research to say either way. He prefer I only got highlights but after my 1st trimester. I hear ya about needing a dye job....but I will def wait until 2nd trimester and just get highlights!

  • I got my hair done at 6 weeks and everything is fine- make sure you're in a well ventilated salon and be sure to tell your stylist you're pregnant.

  • With DD I got my hair colored during the 1st tri & I plan on doing it again this time around.  It doesn't touch your scalp.
  • My OB recommends waiting until out of first tri, as did my previous OB. I got highlights at 36 weeks with DS. I have also heard that semi-perm color can be safer, but who knows. I'm just going to deal with it and wait for a few more weeks.

I hear ya. It is not worth the risk!

  • Im creeping in from the 2nd tri board. Dying your hair is FINE!!! nothing to worry about!  i've gotten mine done twice since becoming PG, and i know tons of moms who have gotten theres done too!

    congrats on the pregnancy!!!

Just because you got it done doesn't mean it is fine! I don't mean that in a bad way. I listen to my OB. He said there is no good research either way so they recommend not to highlight until 2nd trimester. I did it in my 2nd tri and 3rd tri with my dd and she is fine but I am not willing to take any chances in my 1st trimester! My OB's office gives a handout on frequently asked questions and this is on there. To the poster, ask your OB!

  • My OB just told me to wait until 2nd and 3rd tri. Told me to do nothing with dyes in my 1st tri. I held out until 2nd tri and do feel better about it.

How do you know everything is fine when you still have an inside baby?  That doesn't make any sense.

OP- you are best to wait until you are out of 1st tri to touch your hair. Why risk it?

  • I had my hair colored 4 dpo. I am trying not to worry about it....

  • I am a hairdresser and my OB says that there is no proven link between hair color and birth defects. but she recommends waiting until your second tri. However I just wanted you to know that hair color of any kind touches your scalp. even hi lites! that being said i did wait to color my hair with DD until 12 weeks just to be on the safe side. But thats just me ! even semi or demi permeant hair color is still a very strong chemical so its really no safer than using regular dye. hope this helps. if ya having any other questions just ask.
  • With DD I waited until 2nd trimester and will again with this one.  Boy do I need a touch up bad though!!!

omg me too i usually can go ever 3 ish months  but i fade fast and im already like ugh and its been 8 weeks its going to be wa long 6 weeks

  • Silly me got highlights about 4 days before conceiving.  So my roots are starting to come in fast and furious, and I am in desperate need for a visit to my hairdresser.  My OB told me to wait til my 2nd tri to color my hair.  I've been told she is on the conservative side.  All my girlfriends with kids were told by their OBs that they could color their hair in the 1st tri.  So all did, and all their babies are happy and healthy.  As much as I'd love to get rid of these nasty roots, I'm going to listen to my doc and wait.  (Even though I'm looking at another 5-6 weeks!)  With the weight gain, roots to my ears and bags under my eyes, people are going to start thinking I've really let myself go. lol!

  • I was told to wait until my 2nd trimester. The only thing is that I went from blonde to really dark, kinda like a Lohan, so my natural blonde roots are peeking out from underneath the dark color.  Ughhhh!

  • My OB recommended waiting until the 2nd trimester, too.  He said highlighting is fine as long as you're in a well ventilated space because highlights don't touch your scalp.  Also, try to get an early appointment so the fumes in the salon are minimal.  He also said it was fine to dye in the 2nd trimester as well, but he did tell me there is no conclusive research either way.  The best thing to do IMO would be to wait until 2 tri and ask if your hair dresser has any low ammonio/peroxide formulas she can use. (Most salons do)
  • Yeah I heard to wait until after 1st tri.

  • I've heard that it's fine to do it while you're pregnant, for my own piece of mind I would wait until 2nd tri to do it if I were you. I'm sure nothing will go wrong but if I were in your shoes I would wait. After you're in 2nd tri. I wouldn't think twice. I'd prob do it it all the time then....

  • I colored my hair the day after I found out I was pregnant. I'm a hair stylist and I'm not the first to ever be pregnant! We're around the chemicals on an almost daily basis and have healthy babies all the time! If you are worried I do suggest highlighting as opposed to a global color. The lightener should not come in contact with your scalp at all. Also, as someone posted previously, demi or semi-permanent colors are less harsh than permanent. They contain no ammonia (the lighteners mostly do) and no peroxide (found in permanent color). However, if you're wanting to go blond after a previous coloring your only choice is using a lightener. I cannot stress enough to home box dyers that color will not lighten previous color!
  • this is one thing i'm just not willing to take a chance on. I eat lunch meat, i will have a glass of wine in the 2nd and 3rd tri very occasionally... but i just don't feel like ti's been properly reseached and those chemicals are SO toxic. i'm just letting it go as long as I can, very possible the duration of pregnancy.
  • thanks for your comments ladies...my doc appt is Fri so I'll ask him then, but I'm thinking I may wait until the 2nd tri just to be safe. We'll see....guess I'll get some cute HATS in the meantime!!! :)
