Breastfeeding

Thrush anyone?

Last Sunday I noticed my right breast was itchy, and sort of painful. I thought it was just engorged so I made sure LO finished that breast really well before switching to the other at the next feeding. Throughout this week I have noticed LO is  clicking on the right breast when latched on- I am unlatching him over and over to no avail (this is after the LC at the hospital and several nurses called his latch textbook), the nipple area is really sore again (the inital pain of BF'ing had gone away and BF'ing was starting to be comfortable- but not anymore), the areola is sort of pink, and now a few days later my right left breast is feeling the same way. Now, after a feeding, both breasts ache.

I do not notice any white in LO's mouth, only thing is that he is has been spitting up A LOT this week.

I read on kellymom.com the symtoms of thrush and it all sounds like what I am experiencing.

Has anyone else had experience with this???

Do I call my OB or the pediatrician?

Re: Thrush anyone?

  • Call the ped.  If it is thrush you will both need a perscription.  I cream for you and a liquid for LO.  Of course you can try some of the kellymom suggestions first if you would like, but I don't tend to think thrush with a newborn is anything to mess with.

When we had it, I didn't see anything in LO's mouth, either.  The ped did see a tiny white spot, but it was pretty obvious on me.

  • I had thrush and it sucked. It sounds like that's what you have.  Mine was just awful, I think I had it for weeks and didn't realize because everyone was trying to tell me it was normal to be painful.  You'll want to see your OB first, I think, to get a prescription and then you'll need one for LO.  First I tried a nystatin cream but it didn't work so I had to take the oral medicine, ate lots of yogurt, and eventually it went away.

  • Thrush sucks, but you'll get rid of it and feel better.

Until you get to the doctor, this is a very info heavy article on thrush form Mothering:

  • Mix 1TBSP white vinegar with 1 cup water and wash your nipples after each feed, let them air dry. Make a new batch each night.

Use Monistat cream on the affected area, plus another inch circumference after each feed.

Change nursing pads after each feed. Wash everything that your nipples come into contact with every day in warm water (Boppy, sheets, bras, shirts, towels {don?t share a towel} I used pillow cases to cover the Boppy when nursing so I could rotate through them easier)

Boil pump parts/bottles/nipples everything that comes into contact with the baby?s mouth/your nipps for 20 minutes every day with white vinegar added to the water.

Limit sugars and carbs (they will feed the yeast), eat yougurt 2X a day, take garlic pills and anything pro-biotic helps.

Don't use Lanolin, or any cream on your nips, only use the Monistat (or generic) and cover with an Ameda gel pad (because they can be washed)

Do all of this for 2+weeks (don?t stop till 7 days after symptoms stop, no sooner than 2 weeks) If you don?t get rid of it, it can become treatment resistant and even more tough to get rid of!

You can also get Genitian Violet from Walgreens (turns EVERYTHING purple, but will work in a few days)
