Placenta Previa???

Hi, I just hit 20 weeks and my doctor says my placenta is sitting very low right over the cervix and if i have any issues with bleeding i should go right to the emergency room. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Does the placenta often move it's self out of the way before birth?

Re: Placenta Previa???

  • I was told I had it at my 20 week u/s.  I haven't had any bleeding the whole pregnancy.  My doc said it was quite common at 20 weeks and that most of the time your placenta moves.  I go back next week (at my 28 week appt) to have another u/s to see if it has moved.  If it hasn't then I will have to have a c-section.

If you have previa then your placenta is right on top of the "mouth" of your cervix and giving birth vaginally can cause hemorrhaging, thus why you have to have a c-section.

I'm sure it will move though, since they almost always do.  Good luck and I hope yours and mine both move away from the cervix.

  • I was one of the unlucky ones who had a complete placenta previa, with a small amount of bleeding and bedrest for months...all the way up to the "big bleed" and emergency c section at the end - delivering my first son 5 weeks early... (I have since gone on to have 2 VBACs)

Previa is classed in 3 degrees- Marginal, partial and complete (touching, partly covering and totally covering the cervix) If you have another Dr.s appointment, see if you can get them to tell you exactly how they have described it in your charts.  When I was on bedrest I was also given very strict instructions about pelvic rest- as well as a firm directive that if I ever went into the ER for anything to make sure that everyone knew that I had PP and to not allow anyone do an internal exam.

The earlier you are in your pregnancy when they discover it- the more likely it is that the status will change- but if they find it later, when your uterus is already pretty big... the odds of any more movement are going to be a lot less.  There is still plenty of time for that placenta to get out of the way- so I am going to cross my fingers for you that the placenta does move.  If you do wind up with a more definitive diagnosis, or bleeding or what-not- please feel free to contact me if you want a little support from someone who has BTDT.  Big hugs to you!

  • I was told at my 12 1/2 wks NTS u/s that the tip of my placenta was touchin my cervix, and that it should move up as my uterus grows.

I have another u/s at 19 wks (anatomical scan) and she said she should know the status then, but until then no sex.

  • I had partial placenta previa at my 18 week u/s with my first DS. They told me it had an 85% of moving -- it did, but it got worse, and actually became complete placenta previa. So that meant a scheduled c-section (which was a great experience!) and pelvic rest the entire pregnancy. I had periodic u/s's to check on it, and they told me my chance of bleeding was 50/50. If I bled 3 times, they'd have to deliver DS on the 3rd bleed, no matter what. Luckily, I only bled once. I did lose more blood than usual during my c/s, but other than that, it was fine. I just had my big u/s for DS # 2 yesterday, no placenta previa this time!

  • I was diagnosed with complete placenta previa at 15 wks. I will have another sonogram in a month to see if it has moved. From everything I have heard and read, a HUGE percentage of the cases 'fix' themselves by the end of your pregnancy. The earlier you are diagnosed the better. Were you put on any restrictions? I can't lift anything over 5 lbs and no sex. I am sure everything will be fine. Just take it easy and relax (way easier said than done, I know)

Hopefully yours (and mine!) will fix itself.
