Fondu?

Does anyone know if we preggos can have fondu?  I know it's made with white wine usually, but I'm not sure if it gets hot enough for it to burn off? My doctor's office didn't know either... so what do you think?

Re: Fondu?

  • I say go for it!  If there is any alcohol in the white wine it's not going to be enough for you or your LO to feel the effects.

  • I have been to The Melting Pot twice while preggo. Its great! Go for it
  • mmm now I want to go to melting pot!  You're fine, any alcohol would be cooked out.
  • There are many different recipes for fondu, and not all include alcohol. You would have to ask the chef?

  • Well cheese fondue usually has beer or wine; it gets pretty hot and you'd be getting a very small amount of alcohol, if any at all.  I think since they don't have any sort of age restrictions at fondue places or anything, it would be safe for pregnant ladies.

If you're doing meat fondue, they have either oil or broth to cook it in, and that gets to very high temps because you have to cook meat; I'd be very careful if there were seafood, and make sure all your meat is thoroughly cooked.

Dessert fondues can have alcohol in them, but plain chocolate ones are just as delicious for dipping, so I'm pretty sure you're safe there.

    GL and have fun!!!

  • I have had it a couple times while PG and everything is fine.... its really such a little amount and its boiled so there cant be enough remaining alcohol to have any effect at all !! Eat up!!!

this.  i'd say some of it probably boils off and what's left is not enough to cause any problems.  enjoy! :)

  • I asked my OB about "cooked wine" or recipes with sherry etc, because I have a few recipes I love to cook with it, and he said it was totally fine:) I would be more concerned with making sure the cheese they use is pasturized at some really fancy restaurants they will use un-past. cheese.

  • Wow, really want some fondue now...badly!

As PP said, if you get one made with alcohol, I think most of it burns off, so you should be good.  But there are some types that aren't made with alcohol.

  • 1. There is very little wine in fondue to begin with (maybe 1/2 cup to 1 cup for a HUGE pot).

    2. What little alcohol is in there will burn off by the time it gets to your table.

    3. Fondue is made with gruyere cheese (or a combo of gruyere/gouda/swiss), all of which are pasturised, hard cheeses.

    GO FOR IT!

fyi- gruyere can definitely be unpasteurized, they only sell unpasturized. gruyere at my local semi/gourmet grocery store.
