Diaper Genie: Yes or No? What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts about getting a Diaper Genie? Yes or No? Worth the extra cost? Do they work? I'm interested in hearing your opinions!

Thanks!

Re: Diaper Genie: Yes or No? What are your thoughts?

  • I have a diaper genie and everyone I know that has one loves it!

  • I tried the Diaper Genie and Diaper Champ.  IMO they all stink (literally).  I just take all dirty diapers straight to the trash.  Wet ones I put in our regular trash (taken out daily)
  • I honestly haven't heard any great reviews for any of the diaper disposal systems.  Most of them usually still smell even though they are supposed to be odor-free.  In my opinion, you are still storing stinky diaper's in the baby's room - how can the system not smell?!  Lol.  Anyway, I'm just going to use these and take out the diapers as I go: Earth Friendly Diaper Sacks from Buy Buy Baby.  I'm sure you can find something similar anywhere else.  Just my opinions - hope this helps!
  • Personally I wouldn't waste the money. We bought a fancy diaper pail for DD because we were afraid of the smell. No matter how often we changed the bag or bleached that thing, after DD started solids it stunk. We threw out the diaper pail and just put her diapers in the house trash that got taken out every night.
  • I have a Genie b/c my friend gave me hers - never used.  I wouldn't have bought it.  I think we'll probably wind up just taking diapers out to the garage rather than allowing them to pile up in any indoor receptacle, but we have it upstairs in the nursery in case.  We'll see.
  • I wasn't going to get one because I've heard they smell and it sucks to empty them (clears out the room!).  A close friend of mine got us one for our shower, so I figured I'd try it.  I did buy scented plastic bags to try poopy diapers in to hopefully cut down on the smell.  We'll see how it goes.

  • We have used ours for 5 yrs (2 kids) and it only smells when we change it.
  • i hated it with baby #1 at first i liked it because i wouldn't be filling up my house garbage with stinky diapers.. but the genie ended up stinking worse!! plus its another expense.. you always have to have bags.. they'd be heavy to change.. just everything about it.. i hated!!
  • Not using either b/c we're cloth diapering...going w/ just a regular trash-can like thing w/ a lid.  We'll wash every day or every other day so the stink shouldn't be bad.
  • We have a diaper champ. We only used it for wet diapers, never poopy ones (which went straight downstairs or outside), and we never had problems with the smell.

  • I absolutely love our Diaper Genies. We have one upstairs and one downstairs and we only empty them once a week. Ours only smell for about 30 seconds after you add a new diaper. Our secret is that when you're done with the diaper, you have to roll it within itself. Meaning, you roll it into a ball and then seal it with the diaper's own velcro strips. This keeps most of the smell in. And then you put it into the Genie and hold your breath for the next 30 seconds. Other than that, we don't Lysol it, we don't do anything. It does cost somewhat because you are buying the bags/refills vs. the Diaper Champ. But everyone we knew who had a Diaper Champ had to empty it nightly because of the smell. I'm too lazy for that. It's worth the money for me to buy the refills, and we only use about one refill every 3 months or so, and this is with a 2 year old who has larger diapers/pull ups than a newborn.
  • Dont waste your money.  Seriously think about it, do you really want week old poop diapers in your childs room?  I dont.  Use a regular trash can and carry out the poop diapers to the garbage or just empty it once a day.
  • we have the diaper champ and we still use it for DD#1 . . we clean after every changing and do wrap the diapers up before tossing.  We like it, because we cannot throw the diaper out in the trash everything day because we have a dumpster in the community, so it was easier to have one of those. . We plan on using one for DC#2.
  • Baby #6 for us and honestly the diaper genie worked fine..... but what we always come back to is the plastic grocery bags.  Wet diapers in the garbage, poopy diapers tied in a plastic grocery bag and thrown in the outside garbage can.  For us it's just easier and we don't have to have multiple genies around the house or remember to buy the refills.
  • My brother and his wife had one.  They used it twice.  Then they resorted to the grocery bags in the regular trash.  I have no desire to get one.  Really don't want to save poop that long.

  • I was a nanny for years....and I can tell you there is a difference walking into a house that uses a pail and one that doesn't!  People get used to the smell of thier own house, but from an outsiders perspective, I appreciated it when families had a pail.  I prefer the genie myself....convinced my sister to get one...their house has never smelled.  So I'm getting the diaper genie.

  • We still use ours and our DD is almost two. It keeps the smell at bay, it's easy to use, and it holds a ton of diapers. We only empty it once per week on garbage pick-up day and have no smell, and DD  and our dog can't get into it and make a mess or anything.
