Looks like we are going to New Orleans in May. LO will be almost 8 months old. Any suggestions what to do with her? DH will be working with Habitat for Humanity most of the time. I'm thinking we'll play in the pool, go for walks, maybe to the aquarium and zoo. Any other suggestions for those who know the city? We've been quite a few times but this is the first time with a baby. We're staying the Quarter since that is where the Habitat group is staying.
Re: NOLA with a baby
City Park has a wonderful new walking path, and the sculpture garden there is great too. Lots of stuff for baby to look at. The aquarium is neat, but gets pretty crowded with schoolkids. There's a place called "the monkey room" which is basically just an indoor playground and they have a special area for toddlers (they have a website), which is good for rainy days, and the Children's Museum is very cool.
LO might like the Calliope on the riverboats. The Carousel Bar in the lobby of the Hotel Monteleone is neat-an actual carousel that turns 4x hour. I guess NOLA is probably the only city in the world where someone would recommend taking your 8 month old to a bar! It's non-smoking, though, and in a hotel, so it's fine.
Feel free to email me at nolachrissy at gmail before you come down and I'll try to steer you towards some events for that week. Definitely go eat at ACME oyster house on Bienville. It's my favorite. And Star Steakhouse on Decatur....totally not in the guidebooks but really, really good. Also, go to Napoleon House. It's a bar/restaurant now but it was the house they built for Napoleon to live in after they rescued him from exile (didn't exactly go as planned) and order a Pimm's Cup...a refreshing drink on a hot day. LO would probably enjoy Jackson Square, with the street performers, etc.
Oh, and take a ride on a streetcar with the window down. Kids love that. Have fun and thanks for visiting our city!
Also City Park they have a place called Storyland. You should check it out, if you do the Sculpture Garden. It has a Carousel (just redone after Katrina and it's beautiful) and a few rides for older kids but they have a play area that has all of the nursery rhyme characters. Lots of fun for LO's.
Def do the street car!
