Let's talk kid pillows (and vomit)...

The fact that anyone clicks to enter with that title is disturbing but....

Does anyone have a solution for kid pillows and vomit?

I've tried washing but it destroys the pillows.

Any solutions to this problem?

Do they make special water resistant covers for kids pillows?  I don't want full on plastic because I can't imagine that's good for their skin.

For that matter.... can you recommend your kid's pillow?

We've just been using our older flatter adult pillows but I've now had to throw every good flat one out.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I use adult flat pillows.  Target sells a waterproof liner that goes under the pillowcase.  It zips on.  I can't tell you how many times this has been a lifesaver.  I used to have to throw out pillows all the time but now I use the liner and it keeps the pillow dry and clean.

  • I only opened to see the answers in case I have that issue. ; )
  • I've put dd's pillows in the washer/dryer... just have to dry for a long time.

there are waterproof covers that go over the pillows but under the pillowcases.  but the last waterproof mattress cover we tried from Target was when I was pg (and worried about my water breaking in bed) and it was hot as hell.  dh and I would wake up sweating from it. so we pulled it off.  it was just too plasticy and not breathable at all.

  • You can try an allergy cover.  We have those on DS's pillows.  Also, you can wash pillows according to the directions.  If you don't have a front loader, I'd take them to the laundromat.  And, I guess you're supposed to get them completely wet before washing too.

  • I opened this because my son puked on his pillow Monday night.  It took me forever to get the pillow cleaned.  I handwashed the area with the puke.  Then I used Fabreeze to get the smell out.  It took a long time for it to dry after hand washing and I was worried about the Fabreeze so close to his face- but it seems to have worked without any problems.

But I should add ds sleeps with an adult pillow- I don't know if that makes a difference- I never saw a kid pillow before so I don't know if they're different.

  • Gratefully haven't had to deal with the vomit part of this post, but thought I would chime in with where we get DD's toddler pillows.  We have a couple from Ikea and they are great!  Flat enough that her neck isn't at a weird angle, but enough to make her feel like her face is on something more than mattress,  They are fairly cheap, too.  I just had to sew some small pillowcases since the Ikea ones are all rough and most are 50/50.  She only has 100% cotton bedding,  I hate the poly/cotton blends.

    Hope that helps!

  • I second the Target waterproof pillow liner. ?It is soft and thin, not plastic feeling and keeps the pillow in great condition. ?
