Potentially moving to SLC from NYC

Hi moms!

My husband's job may be transferring us from the NYC Metro Area to Salt Lake City this summer. I don't know anything about the city and would love to get a little more insight. He will be working downtown, and we're not sure if we would rent a house/apartment or look to buy (we may rent for a year until we get to know the city and the neighborhoods).

For moms in SLC, would love to find out about family-friendly neighborhoods, child care centers (my son is 18 months and currently goes to part-time child care, 3 days/week), and any recommendations on SLC websites where I could find more helpful city info.

Thanks so much!

Best,

Kat

  • Kat,

Also, I frequent the board "Pinching Your Pennies", that you might be able to ask a question there and get more of a response about the communities.  The website is: https://www.pinchingyourpennies.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=245  (this link will take you directly to the forum).  If it doesn't, just go to pinchingyourpennies.com and click on State Forums.  In the "Utah's Screaming Deals" there you can post about needing more info about SLC and I'm sure the ladies there won't mind giving you some info.  There are currently 119 people viewing that board alone. ;)

The only place I lived in SLC was West Valley and I have to say I would never live there again.  I now live about 30 miles north of SLC.  A lot of people say that if you can deal with the commute, live away from SLC and you'll get a cheaper deal on living - but who knows how well that'd work for other people.

I've heard that the East side of SLC is good for living.

I apologize I don't have much more information.  I haven't lived much outside of the northern part of Utah.  I hope you get the information you are looking for!  Good luck! :)

  • All great sites to check out! As for renting... first, you'll be shocked at what you can get for your money here compared to NYC. The East side is a good place to start, but in general, the further north or south you get, the more family friendly nieghborhoods (with some exceptions in both direction obviously!). I live in Daybreak and love everything they have to offer my family. We're planning on moving to southern utah but if we could take our neighborhood with us, we would! Lots of parks, a lake, rec center, pool, etc all in walking distance! Not to mention tons of shopping and things to do close by. I've lived in Herriman/Riverton area which is nice but I felt too isolated, and my second choice of places to live is in Draper where I originally moved to when I first came to Utah. Personally, I would avoid the west valley/kearns area (too high of crime and in general not considered the best area of town). Sorry I'm not much help on childcare since my SIL babysits my son but lots of options out here I know that! Good luck! This is truly a beautiful state to live in.
  • Hi Kat!

There are lots of great places in SLC to live!  I work downtown so I can give you a lot of insight.  It really depends on what you are looking for.  A house, apartment, condo, etc.

I completely agree with Megan and Missy about the West Valley area.  Like Megan, I live North of SLC in Syracuse and commute downtown everyday.  It's only about 35-40 minutes each way.  Not bad.  You can get a great place in a great neighborhood north of SLC.  Or even South in Sandy.  My sister in law runs a daycare in Sandy, which is south of SLC.  She has been doing it for over 8 years.

Anyhow, I would love to help you in your search, let me know what you need!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the feedback, ladies!

We will have a better sense of what's going on with my husband's job by mid-March and if it looks like it will happen, then we will be coming out to scout out neighborhoods at the end of the month.

I was apprehensive about leaving NYC at first, but everyone has been so friendly and open - it seems like a great area! Thanks again, and I'll keep you updated!

  • I'm a transplant too!  But from FL.  Have lived here for 5+years.  It's been great.  We think Utah is a playground.  There is so much to do and see here.  Magnificent places I've never heard of.  So depending what you like to do may help you decide where to live.  If you like the downtown lifestyle (arts, music, bars, museums, dining) then, I think some of the places just north (The Avenues, Bountiful, Layton) to south or east are great (Sugarhouse, Sandy, Cottonwood Heights).  I don't really know a lot about west.  I live east of I-15.  We made that decision because we wanted to ski, hike, and camp a lot.  Living west of I-15 just made getting to the mountain resorts that much longer.  But I know a lot of people who say that's where the young families live.  Don't know if I count (I'm 36).  Utah has some of the nicest people here.  There are quite a few people who live in Park City and commute to SLC.  But I hear traffic can be miserable.  But it just depends on what you're looking for.  Provo and Ogden are much longer commutes, but I think they are great towns too.  Enjoy the search!
