Radical Parenting

Show on Discovery Health about Radical parenting - Attachment parenting, gender neutral, elimination communication and RADICAL HOME SCHOOLING? The others are no big deal, but the homeschooling family did not follow any curriculum AT ALL and no discipline. Something about no one is more important? The kids make all decisions. What to learn, what to eat, NO RULES, where to sleep. This sounded crazy to me. Thoughts? How are the kids going to get into a college?

Oh, and they showed one family defrosting the placenta and planting it.

Re: Radical Parenting

  • Why is "gender neutral" considered radical?

I am a firm believer in not applying gender roles to my child.  He's three.  If he wants to play with Barbie dolls?  Have at it.

I thought the same thing. Most of these "radical" ideas weren't very radical. Maybe that's because I read of others parent here.

  • Hm.  Sounds like an article I read once about how Scientologists do it.  Ok, I don't really know that much about it but did you ever read how Leah Remini let her, like 5 year old, drink five bottles a night or something.  It sounded weird.

I don't think no rules is a good idea.

  • Rules are what separate us from the animals.

  • I know a certain person who has a hard time following rules. Just sayin'

Hey! Don't you know that is why I went to law school... you have to know the rules in order to break them effectively!

  • We have unschoolers in my neighborhood.  It is interesting.  I had them to a party once and the 8 year old climbed on top of DD's plastic playhouse, so clearly physics was not part of it.  I am all for my kids issuing opinions, but I am the boss.  I think it is good for kids to know who the boss is.
  • Okay, I'm watching now. The unschooling fam seem out of touch with reality. As far as the attachment parenting fam... I think we read a lot about it here. People back home do not do this at all. And while many of us (nesties) do a moderate AP, this family shows the full on 110 percent AP fam. Bf'ng until dc self weans ( her4 y/o is still bfing) and planting the placenta in the backyard. Carrying a toddler still like some of us did our young infants, extended cosleeping, just relatable, but not at the same time. Not to the gender one yet.

I agree.  This one confused me.  My son and I bake together all the time.  It's no big deal.  It's not like we are living in the 50s.  My husband cooks sometimes - I don't consider myself a feminist AT ALL.  LOL.  Now on the other hand, if my son asked if he could wear a Tinkerbell dress to school or something I would say no.  I am going to be honest though ... if we were in the store and my son wanted a Barbie doll I would probably say - those are for girls.  Honestly I probably would.
  • I was wondering what most of those families did to earn money.  They all seemed pretty well off.

I also wanted to know - does the baby pee on her back sometimes?
