Bacterial Vaginosis?

I went to the doctors yesterday and after a pap smear was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis and given Metronidazole Gel to use every night for 5 days. I didn't even have any symptoms...does anyone else have or has had this? Does it cause any complications with pregnancy? It makes me nervous...

Re: Bacterial Vaginosis?

  • My neice had that, from not good enough hygeine (wiping improperly probably). But I am sure your hygeiene is fine! I don't think your dr would have prescribed it if it weren't safe :)

  • Did your dr know you were pregnant? I hope they would prescribe you something that wasn't safe during pregnancy.

Yes, I've had it before. It has to do with your pH in your vag being off. Sometimes there are no symptoms and sometimes you get a diference in your normal odor. It's very common and not a big deal/

  • I've had it before, but not during pg. Depending on your symptoms, it's not any worse than a YI.
  • I had this a month before I got pregnant. The dr. said your vagina has lots of bacteria around it that sometimes just grow uncontrollably at times...so that's when this bacterial vaginosis happens. She said most women get it at least once in their lives...no big deal though! Oh and I didn't have symptoms either and my hygiene is right on point.

  • I have gotten it twice.  I never had any symptoms and both times i only knew because my pap detected it.  As long as your doctor knows you are pregnant im sure she didnt give you anything thats not safe.

ps. now that i think about it i had antibiotics for mine so im sure you have the pregnancy safe solution!

  • I had BV during 1st Tri. I refused the Metronidazole from the doctor as it is a Category C drug (associated with birth defects in 1st tri). My CNM and I decided to try some natural remedies. They worked. When I was retested a week later, the BV was gone!

  • I've had BV a billion times.  I anticipate on getting it while pregnant, bleh.  I hope I can use Metronidazole because the oral antibiotic gives me thrush and migraines!

  • I've posted this in a couple other spots, but it bears repeating.  I have had several run ins with BV... it's miserable!  It comes from the pH being off.  The best thing in the world to keep it at bay is Greek Yogurt!  I eat it every day whether I want to or not - and it's becoming much more 'not' these days.  Also, I was taking RepHresh Pro-B but I stopped because I need to run it past the doc first.

  • I have had BV before.  It is only from the ph in your vagina being off.  Most likely, you have gotten it from being pregnant since pregnancy creates all kinds of different horomones.  The gel your doctor has prescribed you will just balance the ph levels back to normal.  This diagnosis is very common during pregnancy and even without pregnancy...as common as a yeast infection, so no worries.
  • Ive had it before but never while pregnant. But like pp said about BV; never any symptoms. If the doctor's wouldnt have prescribed treatment I dont think I would have mind at all.
