Can you use a 10 key calculator?

Or the keypad to the right on your keyboard? Without looking?

I learned this in high school and it boggles my mind when people don't know how to use it.  My boss and some of my coworkers are always impressed by how fast I can type on it without looking and error free.

I thought everyone took those classes in high school.

Re: Can you use a 10 key calculator?

  • yep.  I did inventory.  At one point I was faster than my supervisor, who had been doing inventroy for years.  When I went to work for a bank, my branch manager had me doing all the night deposits from the weekend (over 200 deposits) because I was pretty fast at it.  I also had to type a data form for him a few times.

  • Yep, I'm an accountant, so it really is necessary! I'm also surprised by how many people can't, but what really surprises me is my DH. He never took typing in highschool, but he can type nearly as fast as I can with 2 fingers. It's the strangest thing!
  • Yep, I used to enter the sales by day a month at time.  I got really good at using it.

  • Nope.  I am a fairly quick hunt and peck typer.  I never took a typing class.  quite frustrating at times.  Maybe I'll teach myself one day.

  • I'm also an accountant, so I am very quick with the 10 key and don't have to look.  But I did not learn to use it in high school, I've just learned through experience and using it everyday.  My DH can't use a 10 key at all, and neither can my boss (who is not an accountant btw).  I did take a typing class in HS, but the 10 key was not taught.

  • No.

I am an extremely fast typer, but I've never had a job that involves entering numbers. I took typing in high school, but we used old school typewriters that didn't have numbers off to the side.

Ditto this.  It is a learned skill, but not from taking a class.  I am a number cruncher so I use a calculator and then enter it in my computer.

  • Yes, but not from a class.  Both of my past two jobs dealt with a lot of numbers, so I learned from having to use it so much.

I wish laptops had them too!  I find myself reaching over to type some numbers over there, only to go DOH! there's not one...and it bums me out.
