Sleeping on side = horrible arm pain ANYONE ELSE?

I guess that I have been sleeping on my sides more and more.

Sometimes I wake up and my arm is asleep or the next morning my arm is in horrible pain.

Is anyone else experiencing this?  How are we supposed to sleep if we cant sleep on the tummy, nor back.....???

  • Me me me!  Someone told me it was carpel tunnel, but I think it's just because I sleep with my right arm under my snoogle pillow.  When I wake up it is so numb that I can't turn my alarm off, and then it hurts.  Sleeping on my side is causing serious pain in my shoulders too.  I think it's just the shift in weight and new way of sleeping
  • YES!

DH and I bought a tempurpedic right after we got the BFP (we were going to buy it anyway, but it seemed even more logical) I had never had this good of sleep before. I'm now a total advocate for tempurpedic, but.... recently I've noticed that it doesn't matter how I'm sleeping, I still wake up with arm pain just like you've described. If it isn't arm pain, it's the leg cramps or just my body instinctively making me toss and turn is LO is uncomfortable.

No idea what to do about that.

  • Omg, yes! My arms are always asleep, and tingly. I usually put one under my pillow though, and sleep on it. My hands too.....

I just want to sleep on my back! /me pouts......

  • I went through a phase where no matter which was I slept, I'd wake up with either one or both arms numb. I asked my OB about it and she said it was some sort of carple tunnel related issue and that all I could do was wear arm braces throughout the pregnancy. (Um, no thanks.) I haven't had a problem with it lately though, so I guess it cleared itself up, whatever it was. (Or bc I wake up and move around so often now.)

Are your arms asleep/in pain because you're laying on them? Or they're just doing that themselves? My OB told me that she wanted me to at least attempt to sleep on my side after 20 wks, but that it wasn't a big deal if I woke up on my back. I usually wake up at some point in the night and have to switch to my back for a while. Your body will tell you if it's not okay for you to sleep on your back.

  • I've always been a side sleeper, so I figured sleeping on my side would be no problem. Side sleeping while pregnant is not nearly as comfortable as I thought it would be.  I always have to switch sides, spend a bit of time on my back to relieve the pressure on my shoulder/hips, and I've taken to sleeping half on my side, half on my stomach, using a body pillow.  I just tuck my shoulder under so it's flat on the bed, while my hips are still mostly on the side.  It sucks.
  • I'm sure there are various reasons to cause this. It's probably best to ask your doctor.

If it turns out to be carpal tunnel I know the wrist braces work pretty well. DH wears them to bed on both hands since he had carpal tunnel surgeries two years ago. I wear one on my right wrist to be proactive since I have some early warning signs. They aren't super stylish but hopefully worth it in the long run.
