a word of advice, learned the hard way: they told us we only needed the gauze for the first 24 hours, then we could just use vaseline right on his penis. Well, it looked so raw and painful that I didn't want to touch it, so I tried smearing some vaseline on the area of the diaper that would come in contact with his penis. Stupid me didn't realize that vaseline makes diapers waterproof- everything just kept leaking out the top/sides of the diaper since it couldn't absorb.
I've found that it's much easier to buy extra 2X2 gauze and keep using it until the circumcision is healed- you can just smear some vaseline on the gauze and cover the area without having to touch/rub it.
We were told to only use vasaline/petrolium jelly. The hospital gave us some in a tube to use and showed us how to make an "ice cream cone" (their exact words) on the end of the penis. This was enough to prevent it from rubbing on the diaper but not too much to interfere with the diapers absorbancy.

Same here - we didn't use anything except for petrolum jelly even minutes after his circumcision.
Our nurse just said glob it on there so he doesn't stick to his diaper - this is what we did and we had no problems doing it this way.

Our hospital told us to use A&D ointment in the "penis sandwich", as they called it. Worked great! We stopped doing the gauze routine when the redness went away, about a week later.
