2nd Trimester

Weight goal

Anyone give themselves one or was given one from their doctor??  This is my first pregnancy and my doctor wants me to gain 20lbs.  Im at 9 already and 25 weeks.  By the way I was underweight prepregnancy.

Re: Weight goal

  • I want to gain about what I did with K- 22 pounds total.  I'm not underweight, but I am very small.  My OB has told me throughout both pregnancies that the closer a woman keeps it 20 pounds (not 25, but he's an older guy) the better off she is.

I'm actually finding it hard to gain weight this time.  I'm only up 3 pounds total, and I've been eating all finds of crap this last week trying to gain some more.  So far, I haven't.

  • I gained about 25 w/ DS.  I'm aiming for under 30.  I think it'll be about right barring anything weird.
  • With DD I gained 30 lbs even. I would like to stay under 30 more around 20- 25 lbs. Of course chasing a toddler around makes it earsier and when your super busy you don't have time to snack. I am up 11lbs right now.
  • My OB said between 25-30. My goal is 20-25. So far I have gained three but it feels and looks like more!

  • I was told 25 to 35 pounds by ob and I was normal weight at the beginning. I'm hoping to keep it as close to 25 as possible so it's easier to lose the weight after delivery.

    This!!

  • I was nervous about gaining since I have struggled with my weight since my late teens, this is my first baby and it seems like I have a ton of friends that had gained like 50 lbs with their pregnancies.  My midwife referred me to a nutritionist and I am aiming for 25 lbs.  I am at 15 now, so that is a little higher than I wanted to be at, but we discussed that she felt it was appropriate for me to gain more like .5 lbs or 2 lbs per month, rather than 1 lb per week.
  • My doctor gave me a goal of 15lbs. I am overweight. Down 2 lbs since first visit though.

  • He only wants you to gain 20# and you were underweight beforehand?  I'm normal weight and my goal is 25 - 35#.  More than 20# would be very appropriate for you as a goal.  I'd even say at least 30#

    THIS!

  • MW wants me to gain 30-35lbs, but I'm aiming for about 25lbs myself. If I'm over that, no big deal - I just don't want to aim high and regret it later.

    I'm currently up approx. 12lbs.

  • They have never mentioned a goal weight to me, so I assume it's to the 25-30 range. I gained 50 with DS and DO NOT want to do that again. I was stuck at 15 over what I was pre-pregnancy for like 6 months and that number still haunts me on the scale. I think I'll cry the day I hit it this pregnancy. My goal is 20 and so far I have gained 4.

This. It seems unusual that they would tell an underweight patient to gain so little. Could you consult someone else in the practice or another doctor even?

I do agree that underweight ladies need to gain a little more. But she could have a situation we don't know about and have a difficult time gaining weight as it is. For some , even 20 pounds is hard to put on. It may be a realistic goal for her.

  • Only 20lbs when you were underweight to begin with?? Wow... I've heard that some dr's are lowering their recommended weight numbers and all I can say is that I'm glad I don't have one of them.

I did set a limit for myself this time, and that is to stay under 35lbs (or at 35lbs). I gained 50 and 42lbs with my last pregnancies and so I'm just shooting to stay within the recommended range now so it's easier to get off afterward.

Well they say that between 25-35 is good to shoot for. I'm 17 weeks and havn't gained any yet tho. I havn't really set a goal for myself at all because I figure my body will gain what it needs. I have  acouple friends that gained about 40 with their pregnancies, even with eating healthy the whole time, and they were able to drop the baby weight really quickly. I'll be worried if I don't gain enough, but not worried if I end up on the higher end of normal.

  • I'm hoping to gain less than 25 lbs. Yes
  • I agree with the pp that only gaining 20lbs if you were underweight does not sound right.  I was slightly underweight in my first tri and my midwife would like to see me gain at least 35lbs.
