Weird douche question

Ok might be TMI... But I have noticed a strong odor down there lately and was wondering if anyone knew if it was ok to douche? Has anyone else had this problem??? I am 2.5 weeks PP and had a c-section if that helps any. TIA

Re: Weird douche question

  • nothing goes up there for 6 weeks....or you could get a uterine infection

  • Yep...your bf'ing correct?  I had this same issue and talked to my OB about it at the 6 week check up.  He took a swab and checked it under microscope.

Apparently with some moms, usually those that BF, after delivery have this issue.  It is caused by low estrogen.  Basically the normal bacteria that is in your vag and keeps everything in check gets out of wack...causing the growth of the bad smelling bacteria.  He wrote me a script to use for 5 days and the smell is gone now.

  • I tried to edit but it didn't work.  I think a douche would just mask the problem temporarily...

  • Absolutely no douching.  Nothing goes up there for 6 weeks like PP said.  Are you still using your peri bottle from the hospital? (wait - maybe you did not get one since you had a c-section).

I use a spray bottle (the peri bottle) after I each bathroom use.  I add a little bit of betodine solution (can be found at any pharmacy) with water in my peri bottle and spray the area down there.  The betodine solution will stain your clothes (so be careful) but it does not burn or anything like that.  It's in the same family with Iodine.

I think this is a good solution for you - to help with the smell with out actually putting anything up there.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, that might be it. I will call my ob. I don't have any burning or itching like there is an infection. So maybe it is the low estrogen. Man so many things we have to deal with as new moms... last thing we should have to deal with is a stinky crotch lol.

  • ya there was no burning or itching for me either.  Just a real strong odor that I actually noticed after I was done bleeding (delivered vaginally).  I would shower in the morning and feel the need to again 6 hours later!  I've never had a yeast infection or the need to douche so I knew something was up...

As some of the previous posters said you may have to tough it out a bit as I got a tube of gel with applicators to insert up there for 5 days.  It was a running joke with DH that I had a stinky crotch:(

  • PP are correct about the uterine infection. Nothing up there for 6 weeks PP.

But, douching is a terrible idea anyway. It messes with the natural balance of healthy bacteria. Smile
