Pregnancy migraines

I had lots of migraines in my early 20s, but over the past 5 years or so have been able to manage my triggers well, and thus have had way fewer. Since getting pregnant, though, I've had two that have been doozies. One was last week (especially over the weekend), and it sent me to the hospital TWICE. The problem is that I also still have bad morning sickness, which puts me right on the edge of dehydration all the time--dehydration is a big trigger for me. And then, also, my migraines make me vomit more.

All in all, it's not pretty.

They gave me narcotics to push me past this last headache, and it worked. But I couldn't help but feel guilty. I just hate taking meds right now, even the meds they say are safe, and I hate the fact that my body demands it. I know that's not a helpful way to feel, but it's how I feel. They gave me a script for at-home meds, too, and I'm just not excited about using them...

Anybody out there have to be treated for pregnancy migraines? What did you do?

Re: Pregnancy migraines

  • I had them as a teenager but they stopped until the 2nd tri.  I had them so bad they made me throw up.  I was able to manage them with ice packs on my neck and forehead and tylenol. They stopped around 20 weeks.

  • I thankfully don't have migraines, but I've been having regular headaches terrible for the last couple days.  I could barely get out of bed today, so I can't imagine a full blown migraine.  My heart goes out to you.  Good luck for sure.

  • If I catch them early enough, ice packs on my neck and forehead help tremendously.  I dose up on caffiene and lay on my packs in a dark room.

If they get too far gone, I take T3 (tylenol + codiene).  I also have a prescription for percocet if I need it.

  • I take T3 as well. I usually just try to make it to bed time, but if it stays for a couple days I have to do something about it.

  • i'm so sorry you are getting them. They are the WORST.

knowing your triggers is really important - staying hydrated is super important no matter what- but esp if you get migraines... for me, making sure i ate often was also important to keep migraines away while pg.

Turned out my BP was actually low - so my doc had me increase caffiene and salt and that helped lower the amount of migraines (I don't like soda so i just took excedrine tension headache in the am to keep migraines away - it's just tylenol + caffiene).  i'd take one as prevention  it helped a lot.

when i did get them bad my docs tried a few things...

tylenol + codine did NOTHING for me

vicodin helped a little - but made me really sleepy so could only take at night

Firoicet worked the best for me- it has caffiene + barbituates - if i got one during the day this is what i took.

percocet did nothing for my migraines.

My OB also let me take Advil up until 26 weeks --- data shows that it's only dangerous in the 3rd tri.  Taking 3-4 advil helped my migraines better than all those other Rx drugs - so I did that sometimes...

I had kidney stones with my singleton pg - and was on morphine drips in the hospital... so don't feel guilty about the meds- they are considered safe during pg. All my boys are healthy and great babies. My sister jokes that Griffin was such a good baby b/c of all the meds i was on while pg - if that is true- then i'm glad i was on those meds, lol :)

it really sucks when bad pain makes you have to take things you are worried about- i know the feeling all too well... Hopefully they will get better as your pg goes on.  Keep up on the triggers - and be careful with yourself.

i also got a facial massage once b/c i had a 5 day migraine that would NOT go away no matter what I did ... the massage helped- but what worked the best was when the weather cleared.... rainy weather always gets me :(

  • Thanks, all. I appreciate the ideas.

  • I feel ya!  Around 12 - 18 weeks I had the WORST headaches of my life.  It has gotten better the last two weeks.  I hope that yours subside soon.  I would ask your Dr. to give you something safe, but I know that there are lots of migraines that you can't take when you are pregnant.

    Take care :)
